They are easy to grow..by plant or seed, which way are you buying them? Cabbage gives you one cabbage per plant, head lettuce also. Leaf lettuce gives you many leaves that you can just clip as you need. Just remember they like cooler temps, lettuce will bolt if let go too dry and with too much heat.

The lettuce only forms one head after it starts to grow awhile.

The other kind Tamara mentioned, Opalrose, is Leaf Lettuce, which you grow from seed. We like growing that because it is easy to grow and very tasty. You can even grow it in a windowbox if you don't have yard space for it. You just sprinkle the seed in a row and cover it with a scant amount of soil. Then as it grows, you just clip off the leaves you want and leave the rest of the plant in the dirt. It will keep growing and allow the baby leaves to mature. It is also pretty!
We were given two hands to hold, two eyes to see, two ears to listen & two legs to walk. But why were we given only one heart? The other heart was given to another for us to find.

I, like Merme, prefer growing leaf lettuce. I can't figure out what people do with an entire row of head lettuce other than sell it at market. When we want a salad we cut what we need.
