Thorny, could you help me identify this bird??? any notion that would at least point me in the right direction to look, would be greatly appreciated. this bird has been around all morning. It began out at the thistle feeder then moved to my Hummingbird feeders. Sorry for the poor photos, but, these photos also were taken thru that window film, so they are not the best, The first & second are the same shot but the second is with auto fix on PB. The 3rd is also a auto fix. the bird did not have any orange other than the one spot at the back of its tail there that I noticed--- ![[Linked Image]](http://i241.photobucket.com/albums/ff68/JunieGirl_2007/mysterybird5-14-10001.jpg) ![[Linked Image]](http://i241.photobucket.com/albums/ff68/JunieGirl_2007/mysterybird5-14-10001-1.jpg) ![[Linked Image]](http://i241.photobucket.com/albums/ff68/JunieGirl_2007/mysterybird5-14-10002-1.jpg)

Your bird is either a male House Finch or a male Purple Finch. I suspect a male Purple Finch due to its more uniform RASPBERRY coloration. Both species are nearly identical with only SUBTLE differences. I have the House Finches in my yard.

Thanks Thorny--I appreciate your help
But, well I thought it might be as you say too, Thorny but really in real life, the bird looked more orange than raspberry on its lower back---and the color on its head & such only showed up when I autofixed the color.
and are they really so large--these are about 2 times the sise of say the goldfinch.

More orange then would be a male House Finch. They ARE larger than Goldfinches. I have NEVER personally seen a male Purple Finch. I have personally seen only ONE Purple Finch, a female, about 15 years ago.

no--it was longer and its head head was more brown--with a mild orange tinge that really only showed up on the camera, and as far as I could see, no color other than brown on the under neck & chest. --BUT when it was sitting away from me I noticed an Orage square area just above its tail. it was streaked with a bit of the white though, if you can tell from my poor photos??
but hey perhaps no one told its parents waht it was supposed to look like.--Probably is still a house finch
and there was one. that I did not get a picture of, that had the same orange in a long strip all up its back. from the top of its tail to the bottom of the head. I am way confused now---

ok so today as I was watching my Oriole eat from my hummingbird feeder I was studying his markings.
I am thinking what I saw & tried to photograph the other day was a juvenile Oriole?/ the o ne brwnish bird UI saw yesterday had the same line of orange the orilole had today but was brown not black & orange.
or perhaps a female???

can any one help me ? I have a Robins nest that has been desserted it has #eggs ,due to a visiting raccoon ,should I remove the nest in hope that the robin will start again or just the eggs ? I have now put wire netting around and hope this will deter the bandit ,this is the 3rd year the robin has returned to the same place .There is also a sparrow nesting in a bird house should the the old nest be removed or do they use the same nest.,The male sparrow is,nt very nice and keeps chasing away the humming bird that tries to frequent the feeder ,it is no where near the nesting box why would he be doing this, any imfo would be apreciated. thanks . Not much you really can do to prevent this. Birds sometimes abandon a nest even with eggs in it. I had Cardinals abandon a nest in my front yard that had FOUR eggs in it. This is normal. It is best just to leave it alone and NOT try to save the nest or eggs. If birds abandon it, they do so for what, in their opinion, is a good reason or reasons. If they no longer feel threatened they may or may not rebuild in that location. As a bird researcher we observe what goes on and I try NOT to interfere with any bird behavior (but I can be a Softy at times). So I let Nature take its course, like it has done for THOUSANDS of years.

I am way confused now--- More orange then would be a male House Finch. That's what I had said as well. I have pictures of a male just as the male I posted above,, only it's a orange color, I posted it last year,, at that time Thorney said it could be it's diet that made more of an orange color, all My male finches have a brown spot on their head,, even tho they are orange or red, some have a more red or orange than others, I believe ,, or the Brown ones with a little cream in them are females. here is the orange one I posted last year,, ![[Linked Image]](http://i43.photobucket.com/albums/e374/2thtek/birds/copperorangefinch2.jpg)

There ARE some ORANGE House Sparrow males and this IS one of them. Just an odd colorform like an Albino or dark-morphed form of a normal bird.
