Sheri sent me a pakage of the same Mammoth sunflower seeds that she planted. I in turn sent her the "Black oil" seeds--thorny said they would grow well. I planted mine in on 4-20-2010. Below is a picture of one of the Mammoth sunflower seedlings taken on 5-12-10 Below here are pictures of one of the Black Oil sunflower seedlings taken on 5-12-10 and the race is on !!!!

The race is on but your bottom leaves are yellow????????? Not a sign of luck. First: Where are your pictures?? about the yellow leaves: yea well, I agree BUT I really think it is a lack of sun---they are in a raised garden, so I am hoping all this rain will not affect them. new pictures soon---

I also found 2 seedlings that the birds must have dropped, so I transplanted them both into one pot by the pond. They are growing very nicely there - I'll take a picture tomorrow.

excellent pictures Lynne. they are so tall & healthy looking.--I will hope that you get some sunflowers from it for the birdies next winter... I saw your posts earlier and my big plan was to go out take an updated photo of my sunflowers, post it & then comment on your lovely sunflowers. well, a storm came up, was supposed to be bad--turned out not to be but the rain hung on--again-- --& then it got dark--so here I sit. But as I said lovely and yea to the blue pot!!!!!

I'll have to get more pictures. I have to say the package seeds are doing much better than the black oil but since I have them planted in different areas I can't be sure it's not that. One year I had 1 show up due to a bird. That was the biggest and best sunflower I've ever had in my yard.

Thanks, Wild Willy But hey----I would think that soon the sun will come out & yours will then pass mine up. Seems to me that anything put out into the ground there flourishes.

Tamara - mine will most likely be the very small flowers that really do not have seeds the birds like to eat, but most likely they will be eaten by the squirrels before they even bloom, as they are every year I've tried to grow some!

Long shot of the Mammoth Sunflowers.--Gee, I need to clean off the wood frame from the raised bed--so sorry-- Close up of mammoth sunflowers Close-up of one of the black oil sunflowers BTW: that "mulch" is freshly cut green grass---under it in some places is landscaping cloth and in the rest under it is lots of newspaper. all was watered down.

As you can see by my pictures I'm still waiting for the winter rye grass cover crop I planted to die out. The directions said it will die as soon as it's warm. We've already been in the 90's. How warm does it have to get?

I took a picture over the weekend but it was blurry. I'll take another this afternoon. The store bought sunflowers are really big. Sorry to say that the black oil bunch got run over by a truck driving to our barn. I don't think they're going to bounce back because he got them going and coming back.
I wasn't patient about the winter rye. I pulled that stuff up. Why is it called "winter" rye. It's supposed to dye back and be green fertilizer.

good luck to you both on suns fl. Sheri glad you did pull that out. They gave incorrect directions on winter rye. Farmers here plant it to hold the soil in the winter. In the spring it must be killed with a spray when a couple inches tall. Had no idew what you were doing. I once let some grow an it got about 8 ft tall. Had to cut it down an put it into shocks for the cattles bed. wee

They always get nipped by frost by the time they make flower heads..I've only grown one that bloomed in my life, and it was a small variety. I think next year I might get Mammoth seeds and start them indoors, maybe they'll be tougher than the normal ones.

Mammoth seeds are what Sheri & I have. You can live vicariousl;y thru ours, OK ?? and yes indoors next spring, sounds like a good idea. You could plant them in some big plastic container (milk jug?) & then just cut off the "pot" so that the plant does not get disturbed???

Honestly I should look into a few big fiber pots..that way I can just stick them straight in the ground until then I'll enjoy all your pics.

dodge or juniegirl, do you have to stake yours up? We had one to fall over so we staked it up. The stalk is so thick I was surprised it couldn't hold the top part.

Mine are not that big yet, but are growing well. (pics in the next few days) I will ask my DH but I guess the stakes would have to be as tall as the sunflower stalk itself. just guessing here. Or perhaps it is like corn, & they need more dirt up around the stalks to help hold them straight upright ??? Tell ya what, my dad is coming over tomorrow I will speak to him.
