Today I mostly raked and picked up my piles and toted them down to the road for pick up. I pulled a few weeds on the way and collected rocks. I did it all as the sun rose at 5:30 so as not to overheat. It is to be 103* today. I was done in by 8:30 am.

Well it looks like it might rain today, it is nice and cloudy. So I didn't want to take out any of the electrical equipment. So I picked up all the dead weeds in front of the shed and weeded the morning glory flower box. It needs bloom boost. It is all vines and no flowers. Then I raked all the leftover leaves from the tree I cut up into the second tier of the future veggy bed. Once I get enough leaf mulch there I'll put the weed barrier over it and let it sit until spring. I'm hoping that the mulch and grass clipping will soften the ground enough that I'll be able to till it next spring and add the compost. Right now it is solid clay and rocks. Then I weeded the foundation beds, sidewalk, and sidewalk beds.

I brought in some cukes, green beans, bell peppers and tomatoes. I think my squash is done due to squash bugs. I'm happy to say I've got 1 tiny birdhouse gourd on the vine. Hope it makes it. dodge, you're sunflowers look healthy.

My garden is doing worse than last year, this year we had unbelievable heat but the heavy rains seem to have done more damage than good. Well that and the late frost didn't help.
I deadheaded some plants last night, that's it.

yesterday some of my tomatoes were split. It was so unbelievably hot then it poured rain for several days so the tomatoes split. Wouldn't it be nice if things would even out once in a while.

Today I dead headed roses and zinnia. Then I watered the last of my fruit trees. Then I cut all the seed pods off of the blackberry lilies. I don't need anymore of those seeds I have hundreds. I got the dead leaves off of the chives. I'm not sure why but if I leave them around the plant it dies completely, but if I take them away then the plant comes back for me. I still need to get out there and give it a hair cut especially because I love it and want some for cooking. I'm thinking top romin. Yummy.

Today I raked. I raked some more. Then I raked again. Then I picked up all of those piles and moved them to the roadside for easier removal to the green waste dump. I am watering but that is a 24/7 job.

pulled a few, very few, weeds. It's too hot to pull weeds that seem to love the heat. Dug some potatoes, brought in some tomatoes and green beans. Next year I'm putting out more potatoes.

Today I prepared my very first soil sample. There was a whole lot more to it than I expected.
First was having to clean up my bucket so the sample wouldn't be contaminated. Then rinsing it well for the same reason. Once it and my spade were cleaned I needed to wet the bed where I wanted to take the samples from. It's been completely dry lately and the soil needed to me slightly damp. After that I needed a 6 to 8 inch deep hole. Once I had that I needed to take a 1 inch by 2 inch ribbon of soil from the edge of the hole. My ribbons were all half peat compost and the other half clay.
Once I had them they needed to be mixed up, the clay of course did not want to cooperate. So I screened it and ended up with barely enough soil to fill the sample box. I was really suprised by that. But at least it's done now.
Then came the information soil test sheet. I had to look up soil maps and find my area and then copy the soil codes onto the sheet. That was interesting. I had of course no idea what it all ment but hopefully I'll find out when the test comes back.
So then I put out the newly oiled sprinkler and of course it began to rain. I hope it is enough rain to do some good.

You know how when it's very hot and dry then it rains container plants give up the ghost. I noticed today that's what happened to a couple of mine...even though I've watered. It rained a lot last night and they're dead today.

Well between the rain drops I managed to turn two piles of compost. That was hard work but didn't take very long. Now I just have 5 left to do.

Yep, sure is better that the dirt already. The back was done about a week before the front but got washed out by some torential rains and had to be hand seeded, but it is coming in. I can't wait to see the haze of green out the front wondows.

That is good news, Tamara. did you cook up lots so DH can eat them tomorrow??? I cut down 4 sunflower heads (stems also) 2 were already empty & 2 were half there. The 2 that were half there yet, are the black oil. I will let them finish drying out & then take out the seeds I guess. --I then dead headed & watered. Finally I pulled grass aound my 2 rose of sharon bushes.

No I ate them all ..I explained to him about picking them and freezing them..and if he doesn't do it, he'll have none for my stews this winter. Sad part is I won't be able to bottle up any Mustard bean pods for him this year.

Oh and say a prayer for my lawn, plants and garden while I'm gone..they are gonna need it I WILL say a prayer for your lawn & your plants. I understand your concern, as I would worry about my gardens here if I were to leave for a bit. However since you have told him how to pick & freeze--and he will be off work for this week, if he does not do this, well I will not feel sorry for him. I will however feel sorry for your added grocery bill this fall because of it..

today I built a little bed around my white spirea using local stones of which I have an abundance. Then I mulched it with some of the free mulch the electric company made when they cleaned up there right of way. So it looks very cute right now.

I picked a bunch of tomatoes. I must have the fruitworm because a bunch of the tomatoes have holes bored into them. It's too late in the season though for me to spray. I'm ready for some cool weather.

I'm sorry to hear about the pest problems. I know what you mean. Just about this time of year I'm so tired of the heat, weeding and fighting bugs that I'm ready for fall.

THis is crazy. I have 2 baby boo pumkins on now . Tiny white ones. zucchine gives us about one a week. They are behind the sunflowers. Perhaps they need all day sun?????????? Oh well. Have good an plenty apples an pears now. dodge

I re-planted an apple tree that I found in the orchard on my property about 8 years ago. No clue on what kind it was..this is the first year I got apples, one fell today and I picked it up to try..delicious. I am so happy..it is tart yet sweet, great for pies and jelly.

Tamara Smart girl. I love the sour ones also. I have 2 trees out there , usually froze the blossoms, but this time they are a good size.. i do apple sauce an freeze apples for pies. Oh how I love apple pie. granddaughter loves my apple sauce. When she eats here, she keeps saying more apple sauce , more apple sauce, her mom get embarressed. we laugh. I planted a Gala apple seed, from one at a the store, an it is abut 7 food tall now, but not apples on it yet. maybe next year. It will be crossed. I will too if it doesnt bea. dodge

Tamara leave the plants in. That happened to me several years back---I was too lazy to take out the plants, --So then, much later in the fall, they made peppers like crazy. it was such a surprise. I decided the heat prevented them from growing earlier. So I say they are there, so leave them in until the frost kills them & see what happens....

Carol, I left them in but we are getting frosts already..what a year.
Thanks Dodge, I bought apple trees that never took so I just went up into the cows orchard and dug out a two foot tall tree..took a long while to bare but it was worth the wait..it's the same apples that are on my large apple tree at the road that is so old that it is breaking and will need to be cut down in a few years.
I weeded yesterday..and watered this morning.

We've seen that a lot around here Dodge..so now they leave the well casings a foot above ground. It is impossible to move all the snow and dig down where we are when problems arise in winter.
Sorry you had to buy another pump but am glad it happened before the frozen ground arrived...

Today Rod helped me cut down the last 3 sunflowers that I had. Then I weeded, and weeded, & weeded. After the 1 & 9/10 inches of rain we had it was so easy.
*I was weeding my asperagus bed, and under where the sunflowers were.* The weather was wonderful!!!!!

The only thing I did outdoors today was water. All day, all night. It was too hot to work out there.

The only thing I did outdoors today was water. All day, all night. It was too hot to work out there. That is what I told Rod yesterday as I was weeding my asperagus. Well the too hot part..... he says to me---(after all they years I have had asperagus beds) what is that (referring to the tall Asperagus fronds) & is it supposed to be there. so I patiently explain yes it was but said the weeds were not & if it had not of been so hot or wet all summer they would not have been. sadly I think I have lost a whole row of plants to the weeds--- I will wait until I am mulcking the bed this fall to knmow for sure.

It has been an especially hard year I think. Or maybe it's just that I'm getting older. But don't tell anyone that lol. Yesterday Mandy's husband brought over some of veggies that hadn't been used. She wanted the jars and I wanted what was in them so it was a good deal all the way around. I wasn't feeling good enough to turn them into the compost yesterday but I got to it this morning. Three of my piles are going to be ready for the veggie garden come spring and that is fantastic. I'm so looking forward to those fresh vegtables and having tomatoes. I refuse to pay 2.50 for a pound of tomatoes. So I haven't had any tomatoes. But next year I'm going to have them all summer long. I have roma seeds and I'm looking forward to planting them.

I walked around in the garden yesterday and got a few tomatoes. It's been a horribly, hot, dry year and I just haven't kept things up. I could probably salvage a few plants if I babied them but I'm not in the mood.
TK, you would be so ashamed of me. The morning glories have taken over the compost pile.

lol, not enough greens or turning. I understand completely. The blackberries and locus trees are trying to encroach on mine. I've been painting the eraser on them when they show up.
So no I'm not ashamed of you at all. It happens to me to. I just can't do everything I would like to when it is really hot.

I'm watering the fruit today. Or at least half of it. I also weeded the side foundation bed and admired the impatience. I wish they were perennial. Then I weeded half of the sidewalk bed and sidewalk and about 1/3 of the front foundation bed. I so wanted to get more done but it was just to hot.

Today I managed to dig out a bucket of dirt from the future root cellar. And get the compost out that I'm going to add to it but my drill was out of power so combining it will have to wait until tomorrow. I'm going to use it for my fall lettuce. Yummy.
And then I'm watering the fruit trees. I'm on the last one right now.
Then I pruned the zinnia bushes. I was worried that it would look strange but it still look wonderful. I'm loving those...even if they are pink lol.

I got yesterdays bucket of soil mixed and layed down and then shoveled up another and mixed it up and put it in the veggie bed. One more and I'm ready to plant lettuce. I'm starting with the black seeded simpson since it's suppose to be morer heat tolerant.
And today the blueberries and areas where there is now drip lines will get watered. At least as many as I can before midday.

I mixed up another bucket and realized that I need one or two more to complete the row. But I went ahead and planted some of the black seeded simpson and some butter crunch lettuce just because I couldn't resist.
I'm working on the watering. wish me luck on that one ok?
