I moved in Jan from a small town lot to a larger country lot across from a bay near Lake Ontario in NY and have been fascinated by the variety of birds I am seeing- some for the first time. I have the usual assortment but have finally seen a Pileated Woodpecker as well as a Red-Bellied Woodpecker. I was delighted to spot the Cedar Waxwings-an old favorite- as well as the orioles and hummers. Many of the birds I see and am trying to ID have lots of yellow on them and they are not Goldfinches. I think one was a Yellow Warbler and the other a Palm Warbler but will continue to spot them so I can be sure. Oh yeah, there are Purple Martins EVERYWHERE! Can't wait to go to the local nature center to see the Heron Rookery and the Great Horned Owl.

do you have a bird book? I've found that is the best way to figure things out if you can't post a picture on here and ask.

Actually, I have two books that I am using. Posting a picture is a problem because I don't know how and if I did, I can't find the cable that goes from the camera to the computer. I am TI Technologically impaired to the max. When my kids come up to visit, I will ask them to show me how to do it and then maybe I can get some pics and post them. I am really enjoying the new surroundings and spotted a green heron just the other day sitting on a limb hanging over some back water.

I use Sibley's Guide to birds of North America, Eastern edition. Put the pictures on your computer, open up a FREE Photobucket account, and from there you can transfer the pictures anywhere on the Web that you want to.

Isn't it so exciting to see so many varieties of birds? I especially like the ones with colors that are bright or different. So glad you are enjoying birding in your new place.

Sibley's is THE best field guide on North American birds available at this time.
