A NEW Camera bird for me taken yesterday. This is a male Summer Tanager. The Summer Tanager is North America's ONLY solid red bird...and before you say, Cardinal, a Cardinal has a black mask. A Summer Tanager is TOTALLY and COMPLETELY red, The females are yellow. their call is a dry, non-musical, "Pick It Up!" or more often "Picky TUP!" I heard this one calling close to me yesterday morning and immediately started scanning the tops of the highest trees around me. this is their preferred habitat when singing. Sure enough he was directly above me head. The size and shape of a Mockingbird, they LOOK like a MOCKINGBIRD that has been Spray-painted Bright red. They DO migrate and this fellow and the others in North America, will be in South America in a few weeks. This is the FIRST male SUMMER Tanager I have EVER PHOTOGRAPHED, although I've see dozens every year.
