OK unfortunate news---last night DH & I cleaned out my water garden pot. MY big plan was to keep my liluy tuber over the winter & reset it next spring. Well Rod was going to put teh pot down in the basement for me so I could put the water l ily in it again & refill some of the water. But hten he said what is going to keep it from smelling up the basement ? (the stagnent water) he said if it does he wanted to get rid of the flower--so I said well then why go thru the work of putting it downstairs now?? so unless I can come up with something today, I am going to have to just get rid of it. tears

I found this as an alternative to keeping stagnant water around, Carol.
"Lift the entire plant, cut off most of the top and store the rhizome in a plastic bag with some damp peat moss or sand. Store the bag somewhere dark at about 50 - 60 degrees F. Check periodically to make sure it’s not getting dry or soft and moldy."
"If your plant has tiny tubers growing at the base, you can remove these offsets and store them in water or damp peat moss, again at about 50 - 60 degrees F. They should start to sprout in the spring and can then be potted up."
"Wait until the water warms in your pond next spring, before bringing your water lily back outdoors. The water temperature should be about 70 degrees F., for tropical water lilies. If it’s too cool, the plant will revert back to dormancy or be killed off by frost and you don’t want to do that after all your efforts over the winter."

Yesterday I lifted the Peacock Orchids. I'm going to try and force them inside. I was reading an article about them and someone said they did so I'm going to try.

Bless you, Tina.--now to find some sand. Those temperatuire conditions sound like our basement, as DH keeps the heating vents closed.

cactus potting soil might work as sand for this purpose.

Well today I put the hose away, and I took some cuttings.

Rake, rake, rake. Then a break. Then rake, rake, rake. I am back to get my pole saw for some fallen branches.

While I was out with my pole saw I reached into the middle of a thorny shrub to cut a drooping branch or two off. Saves trying to get in there with shorter hand tools and get stuck. Pyracantha (firethorn) is a beautiful but deadly plant. But the berries weight them down over my road and they try to slap my face when I drive by in a golf cart.

Well I finally cleared off the walkway from all the leaves and the southeast side of the house as well. That filled one trashcan full now I plan to mulch them down into 1 inch pieces and water them into the foundation beds. Of course I'll need more leaves but that isn't a problem lol. raking over the chocolate mint was a pure delight. i love that smell.

Well we had a freeze that took out the zinnia, celosia, doulbe impatiens, and cockscomb so I pulled them up and put them in the compost pile after harvesting some more of the really red and the peach zinnia. I definitely want to keep those in my stash they are really pretty.

I still have more to do than I want to think about. And the sidewalk bed looks alittle barren at the moment. But as time goes on I'll get a handle on it. Maybe some dwarf everygreens in that bed would help with the winter interest.

I haven't done anything in my yard lately. We've got to start blowing leaves or we're gonna regret it.

Well it's raining today so now the leaves will be wet so no blowing for a day or two while more of them fall.
