I'm looking to plant some evergreen trees or tall shrubs along my back fence in a very shady area -- under a few large maples. Any suggestions? I'm hoping for something at least 6 ft tall.

Can't remember exactly how tall Aucuba gets but it's a pretty evergreen shrub that prefers shade. Glossy green leaves with yellow specks that make it show out nicely in the shade. I tried some in partial shade and they just couldn't handle the sun at all and I lost them both.

dogwood, azaleas, deciduous rhododendrons

I love the sweet scents wafting in the breeze. I stop to admire the vibrant colors of all living things. And people think me odd. Then ODD I am!!!

Black Japanese Maple is evergreen (or is it everpurple or everred?), grows 10 feet tall (10-12' wide) and is hardy to zone 5. See Acer palmatum 'Nigrum' in http://www.monrovia.com/PlantInf.nsf/08510e01e61cc962882571a9005a9153/e5973fe91b6f84ec8825684d0070268d!OpenDocument

While Monrovia is a wholesaler, my local nurseries will special order from them when the local nursery does not carry the variety that I want. You could try to see if your local nursery can special order from another Canadian wholesaler or from Monrovia.

Canadian hemlocks! They are beautiful, delicate looking evergreens, and they prefer shady conditions. They are trees, so they do need a little room. But they would create a nice screen soon, depending on the size you plant, and pruning makes them grow quicker.
