This year my 4 year old forsythia put on flowers, then leaves, at the base of the cane and at the top of the cane but everything inbetween is brown. The cane (bottom to top) is alive. Can anyone explain what's going on? Usually this is a beautiful bloomer and robust shrub.

Sometimes the clump needs thinning.
