I just stuck it in dirt and it grew like crazy. I now see 7 stalks and the leaves are starting to die, does that mean it's time to dig or do I wait some more? No clue here....

I live in Northern Indiana and I believe I planted it in Jan. of this year. It has been growing in a medium sized pot indoors. I just did it for fun.

well then--If the plant is dying---wait until it is completely gone & then feel down & see if you can find a potato, & if you do feel fruit, then harvest. that is what they do--when they have grown their fruit the green dies off.--if your plant was outside, you could harvest before they were completley brown if you wanted younger smaller potatoes.

Good luck--I like your experiment

Yeah, potatoes always need 4-5 months till they are old enough for harvesting. And that was right about the little new potatoes and they really taste good especially with the peels left on!
one thing to remember though is that potatoes, tomatoes, and eggplant attract the same kinda pests so its a good idea to plant them somewhere else the next year. :)

Oops...I replanted my potato in the same pot. The original potato was still just as firm as the day I planted it the first time so I stuck it back in the pot and now it's growing again. (will probably end up with small potatoes again.) The two babies were too small to eat so I put them back in. Don't know what will happen to them. My ginger also started sprouting on me so I stuck it in the pot also. I really don't have any idea what I'm doing... grin
