And is it necessary? The nursery guy suggested I use gypsum in my veggie garden. As with everything I read, it seems there are differing opinions about it. I can't figure out if it is ok for organic gardening, first of all. And he said that it is needed in our area (Sacramento). I've already planted so is it too late? Or is there something better?
Thanks for all the advice so far! You all are great!!

Why did he suggest gypsum? Did you ask a specific question that brought it up? It can be organic like lime. But neither are necessary unless your soil needs to be less acidic. If you have amended with organic matter then you probably do not need this.

Thanks Tina. I think I mentioned to him that I was just starting out so maybe he thought I was planting right in the ground or something. We did use a good soil amendment, so I guess we are good for now.

Gypsum is organic, it's a mineral. Gypsum is used here a lot for our heavy clay soil, but like Tina said if you're planting in compost then it's probably not going to be an issue. If you have any question about whether you need gypsum or your plants aren't growing well, get your soil tested. You can get test kits online or talk to your county extension office.

Thank you for the gypsum advice. So far, so good with everything growing. At least as well as can be expected with this chilly, rainy weather.
