ok--so I guess next spring I can try a toad lily in my one small 7 ft by 2 ft area in the front of my house---The house shades it in the afternoon. so, I am asking for opinions here--- do I try to find seeds NOW & then plant them in a while here, or do I wait & try to plant seeds early next spring or do you think it would be possible for me to buy a plant next spring & plant that ??? OK this is me editing now--- (questions about the Masterwort plant) The Toad lily has motivated me---I want to know can I buy the Masterwort "plant" or do I need to buy seeds of it as well---It says I can use a container to grow it--& I have a lot of them--so I thought I would do that with the masterwort & keep it on the front porch--well obviously I cannot plant seeds in a container, they will freeze out,- right??? so is there a company that I could buyone or both of these plants from???-- any advice??? but hey this plant (toad lily) is way cool, dont ya think???? comment goes for the "masterwort" as well----

The seeds of both plants require cold stratification (chilling) so you should be able to plant them in your containers. I found Toad lily seeds for $1.95 and plants for $14.95 at Park Seeds Burpee normally has Masterwort plants for $12.95, but they are out of stock. Personally, I would try to find some seeds now and plant them this fall...

One more question, Bill---- After I plant my seeds should I cover them with some mulch this winter (I was thinking a good covering of mulched leaves) ??? and if I should, then how early would I uncover them in the spring. so they can germinate???

Hi Dodge, Hibiscus seeds have to be sown from spring up until late summer. I am working on a fall seed and bulb planting page for you

See Bill, this is where I don't always look at the books. I figure Mother Nature works hard towards keeping her greenery going in the different zones that they live in. If my plants drop their seeds in late summer or fall then I figure that is when SHE intended them to be planted. There may be better timing if I am pushing the zones for my plants. But I like doing it this way. For my hibiscus, I allow the seeds to drop and sprout and next spring I will remove the little plants to new homes. I do pretty much the same with most perennial, self-seeding plants. Columbines are a favorite. They seem to do best for me when they are sown fresh, very fresh. But I don't live in a deep freeze zone so maybe coddling is more required? Or gets better results or a better survival rate?
