We've had 2 days of torrential rains now. Fortunately, Don installed an overflow pipe into the skimmer last week, so we don't have to run out in this rain and let some water out of the pond to avoid overflowing.
This was the view from our deck yesterday in between severe thunderstorms. The water lilies seem to be loving this weather - lots of blooms so far this year!

As you both know, Diane and Carol, there hasn't been any time to even really glance at the pond lately, as I am only home to sleep every other night. But I did notice that Don turned the waterfall on very early this year since we've had such unusually warm temperatures and the water is already very cloudy. I did notice the other morning that there are 5 lily pads up at the surface - again very early for that. It's too early to clean the plant pots and divide the plants. I just hope things can hold off for a while until I can get back into gardening.

That beautiful pond puts mine to shame, but hopefully over the years it will get better! My pond is as much for the birds as it is enjoyable for me to watch the birds. We have a bird bath inside the pond with a water pump that keeps the water circulating. In the winter I have a small heater that keeps the water from freezing. When the sun comes back out I'll take a picture and post it. My question is...can I grow lily pads in my pond? I've never really thought about growing plants in my pond, as we are a zone 3, but after looking at your beautiful pond, Purl One, I may have to investigate! Thanks for the pictures.

Thanks Carol and Bobbie.
Bobbie - you can definitely grow water lilies in your pond. Carol now grows them in a 1/2 barrel after we discussed at length how jt could work. I would suggest speaking with her about jt since she has had success.
I took a minute this morning, before returning to the hospital, to look over the pond. Carol, you will be happy to hear that there were 4 full grown frogs around the pond. It's only a matter of time before they will be singing their hearts out doing their mating game again!

[quote=JunieGirl I think of that pond every time I have to discard my water lily at the end of the season. So happy that yours are doing so well.... [/quote] So you can't winter a water lily over? I guess that is what I want to get away from. I would love any tips on water lilies. I did look into it once, but that was before getting a stock tank heater for my pond and I drained the pond in the fall. But the past 2 winters we have been successful with keeping the pond water running that maybe now I am ready to try a few plants in there!

ok, so I don't know a lot--Lynne does over winter her lilies, though and so---I think one cuts them down & puts them into the bottom of the pond so they will not freeze then in the spring you possibly re-pot them & add tomato fertilizer spikes, and set them up to where they will set in the pond for the summer. I just have no place to over winter my lilies, so I just let them die....

Luckily I have a meeting this Sat in a town a couple of hours away on Sat...and there is a town in-between that has a wonderful nursery. Think I'll stop and see what they have to offer! I'll let you know what I find and what I buy. Kind of excited about this

Last night I went back and read through every single thread having to do with your pond. It is GORGEOUS!! This past September we had horrible flooding and we found a small heavy plastic pond insert laying in the road. We left it alone for 3 days and nobody took it, so I claimed it. Now I'm just trying to figure out where to put it!

Well, Lynne, mine won't be as awsome as your pond, but tomorrow I plan on getting some pictures on here. I bought a water lily, a few gold fish, and a pot of star grass for my pond. I just got home and it is too late today to put them in my pond, so I just put some pond water in a few containers and put my new plants in the containers and put them in the green house for tonight. I'll introduce them into the pond tomorrow and take a few pictures! The water lily won't have a flower yet, but they are supposed to be a hot pink The guy at the nursery said they should winter over just fine because of the heater I put in the pond in the winter.

A couple of the numerous frogs we have in the pond this year decided to pose for me the other day. Some will sit and let me be very close, while others jump immediately into the water when someone approaches. These 2 sat for quite a while the other day.

Diane - I have seen dragonfly nymphs, but I think it's too early for full grown ones to be around - it's pretty cool here still - highs only in the low 60's.
