Checking in here from the suburbs of NYC; just 40 miles west of NYC. EVERYTHING is shut down. The subways, buses off the streets, the airports, all schools, even Broadway shows, and the NY Stock Market are closed. They just said if they close the market again tomorrow, it will be the first time EVER!

My husband went to work - he's only 15 minutes away in NJ so he can get home pretty quickly if need be. My daughter is sleeping in, as her college is closed today, and I am here on the computer while we still have power. My son is vacationing in Peru, and is currently putting on suntan lotion in preparation for a hike in the Amazon Rain Forest, lucky guy!

Calgon... take me away!

NY Stock Exchange has now been closed for tomorrow - history is now made!

My husband came home about 2 hours ago with more food staples. It's getting much windier now, and rainy. The worst is yet to come this evening. Many areas are without power already - fortunately we still have.

Had to cancel a big meeting for tomorrow, and a dr's appointment. All are rescheduled, and offices will be closed again tomorrow anyway.

Hanging tight here!

LOL ! Gotta love the guys who like roughing it... we keep extras all the time but especially winter for the blizzards that happen occasionally here... and we keep wood for the fireplace/woodstove in the winter in a big trash can in the garage so it stays dry and accessible- Joe brings in extra when the weather is supposed to be bad just in case we lose power... all elec house we could still cook and eat...

I have our 3 boys and one from next door and Senika too... they are upstairs playing the Wii... she is watching and getting in the way...LOL!

Well off to try and make up a meatloaf or 2... will be dinner tonit... and one for the freezer for later... may make baked taters too... sounds good- we are in the 70's this week- almost feel guilty with it being so crappy on the east coast....
Have a good evening all and stay safe!

We also have lots of firewood just in case, Nana, and my husband brought up his camping pots, etc so we could heat water, soup, etc if need be in the fireplace. He also got marshmallows so we could have a bit of fun if the power goes out.

Right now it's VERY windy, and all the bridges into NYC have been closed. Everything is still closed for tomorrow - schools, stock market, most businesses.

Now if I could just figure out what to do with our left over pork roast for dinner tonight - so tired of the same old thing - either putting it in rice or pasta. We're not big on sauces, so I usually just melt butter and/or parmesian cheese in that. But been there... done that...

I was just talking to Rachel on the phone and was wondering if Lynne still had power.
Said a few minutes ago in CNN the first fatality...a man in Queens was hit by a tree that fell.
I am so worried...this is so bad.
Wind is gusting here pretty bad, and I am FAR away from it.

It's 38 here and the wind will about knock you down. I had to go out and feed the strays awhile ago and couldn't believe it. The snow several counties over is piling up fast. I'm not worried about anything here...much. I am so worried about the people who are in the middle of it. And that crane they keep showing that broke (on CNN) is totally freaky! Why wasn't that secured YESTERDAY!!!???

Praying all is o.k. with everyone.

..the storm is just South West of us and starting to affect us. We are getting rain and wind. Not sure how hard we'll get hit...but we were given our wind and storm surge warnings as of an hour ago. Tomorrow we will get the worst of it. Strange thing is that it is milder out there temperature wise than normal.

Watching the news...somewhere in Virginia might see up to a meter(39 inches) of snow.

Greetings from a friend's house on the other side of our county where she has power. We lost ours on Monday night at 7:30 and they are now saying it could be out for another week!!! It's COLD in our house - the fireplace only heats the room it's in. The temperature outside last night was in the low 40's, inside it was 58 this morning. Cooking on my husband's camping stove works ok, but the smell of the gas is awful, and opening the windows just makes it colder in the house.

I have a good book that I read by flashlight at night, under many covers. But it's getting boring hours on end, and we are eating waaaaaay too many carbs. The generator next door makes us want to scream because it is sooooo loud! My daughter cannot sleep, because the generator is outside her bedroom window. Her community college has been closed since Monday, and will probably stay closed all week due to the many trees that are down around it, plus the power is out there - it's only 1/2 mile from our house.

Thankfully everyone is safe, so that is the most important thing. This too shall pass, but not soon enough for me!

Well we finally got power back on 2 hours ago thumbup - after being out for 98 hours shock - just over 4 days! I have spent the last 2 hours scrubbing out the fridge and freezer - it smelled like a penicilin experiment gone bad! nervous And I am allergic to penicilin! OY! We threw EVERYTHING out - it looks brand new and completely empty.

Now to find a gas station that actually has gas for sale, that doesn't have a line over 2 hours long. I never thought we'd see something like that around here, but it's a nightmare.

First on my schedule is hopefully a good night's sleep where I'm not freezing.

'nite all...

Thanks Bill! kissie I've been home the entire time - only went to my friend's for a couple of hours on Wednesday to watch The Chew show on Halloween - we were in costume in the audience. Otherwise, I've been here in the dark and cold for those awful 4 days.

But it's over now, I need to go grocery shopping soon as our fridge is totally empty, and if I ever see a carb loaded food again, it will be too soon! rolz Can't wait to get some fresh fruit and veggies! thumbup And maybe some ice cream for a well deserved treat! shewinks

And hopefully to find some gas for my car so I can drive the 40 miles over to dad's and do his weekly medicine, since my inept and selfish sister (who lives 2 miles from dad!!!) won't do it! madd uhuhh

Will post pictures of the storm damage as soon as I get a chance to upload them.

Glad you got your electric back.
How many times did you walk into a room and hit your light switch?

Our power was out at the farm for 16 days after a terrible ice storm in '94 that made national news. Thank God I had a fireplace in the kitchen. We roasted a lot of hotdogs! I had a lot of dogs back then, and the colder it got, I would just holler for another dog to get on the bed.

Sooooooo true, Cindy! Been there, done that! haha

None of our 4 cats wanted to snuggle, try as I might! I wore 2 pairs of fluffy fleece pj bottoms, a very heavy sweatshirt over a long sleeved top, fleece socks in slippers, and fingerless gloves the entire time. Covered with a blanket as well.

It's very windy here today, and they are calling for a N'orEaster to come in on Wednesday into Thursday. Can't a girl get a break??? I HAVE to be at dad's for a big pow-wow with his attorney and financial planner about mom's will on Wednesday - it's already been postponed twice. OY!

Yes Diane, we are extremely thankful for our safety. These were bumps in the road for us that we are getting back to normal today. Don is finishing up taking care of the downed tree, and I am now going out to refill the fridge/freezer. It will be good to get out of the house - I've only left it that one brief time to watch the show at my friend's house.

I heard on the news there is a lot of trouble with insurance. Some people have high percentage deductibles that they didn't know about.

yep even in places that have had no damage. We got 2 letters this month---. first one said that our deductable had been changed to $1500.00 on such as hail damage or a wind storm damage, & we did not even make a claim. Then they raised the cost of our homeowners insurance by $100.00. you do not even want to know waht I owe them for a years coverage. It is due here in like 10 days--great right before Christmas & all.

I have no idea who thinks we can continue to live like this. I am 60 years old & I need to find a job--not that anyone will hire a 60 year old person, I have been trying.
