and it is depositing it on nearby furniture. Is this normal, or symptomatic of something? Thanks.

Welcome, John. Do check closely for small insects. Different types drop a sweet substance called honeydew. And I am not sure if citrus is among the plants that will emit sap on its own. But many trees do when the conditions are ripe for it; temps mostly. I would either move the plant or the furniture away from it and also lay something out around it to protect from whatever it is dropping.
Good luck!
