I just received my new hickory tree from Miller's and planted it Sunday morning. I had ordered two of them a couple of years ago, but both had died, so I'm trying again. I used the same planting hole as one I used before, so this time, I was able to plant immediately. I also watered it in with Super Thrive, so hopefully that will give me better results.

Boy, Terry, I hope there's nothing wrong with the spot where you planted... We have hickories all over our property. I think they're all just natives. Are yours specific cultivars? Ours are hard to crack, and the meats are small. I may need to get some cultivars and try grafting...

Dave---"Boy, Terry, I hope there's nothing wrong with the spot where you planted..." I don't think so, I prepared it just like they said to. But when I originally planted them a couple of years ago, I put tree tubes around them to protect them from the deer. It was a summer with above average rainfall, and the leaves got mildew and fell off. It weakened them. One of them died yet that summer, and the other survived to shoot out weak new growth the following spring before succumbing. This year, maybe I'll just put cages around them, so they can still get good air circulation.

I just unloaded a rick of Hickory, this one was a victim of the ice storms we had.
I can hardly wait until I taste the ribs!!!
