Hello everyone! I miss you all. Got myself all moved into my new place and it's working out pretty well. My brother got married on Saturday, that was a good party. They're moving to Utah pretty soon and I just found out my mom plans to follow them after the new year. My family is up and leaving me behind. I'm not going anywhere though.

Nice to see you, Cheryl. Glad to hear that you are all settled. I have to say, if it were me, I know I would at least consider movoing to be near my family. Sounds as if they are all moving to Utah ??? Going to bed now--got to get up early in the morning--5 am...

Yes, Tina--Last well my mom had a cystoscopy and they found a small tumor. Now why they just did not put her to sleep & remove it is beyond us--but no, we have to go back tomorrow to have it removed. I am sure glad that Cheryl noticed that we needed a new CH--because apparently I did not--- I could not go to sleep earlier--so now I guess I will stay awake half the night again.

Good morning all...nice to hear that you are doing good Cheryl.
Junie, they removed my tumor by a colonoscopy as well...guess they wanted to double check the whole bowel at the same time.

I have confused you, Sunny. My mom had a cystoscopy...they sent a camera up into her bladder to have a look-see. I thought since they were alredy there, they should have just put her to sleep & done the removal then--but nope--they had her come back & are doing it today. I am at the hospital now--in a very nice waiting-room. It is complete with comfortable seating & 2, count them, computers. YAY !!!! it is me ediitng: I am awake now-- --I had 2 polyps when I had my colonoscopy as well, Sunny. They removed them while I was in the surgery room as well. That was ever so much easier to my notion...

Good morning. It does sound easier to have those things done in one fell swoop. I woke and went out to watch the sun rise and pulled some weeds. Life is good. The heat is coming back though. I will be stuck back indoors with my vacuum and such soon enough.

Good Morning , We got back yesterday , had a nice time up there- something about sitting by moving water is so relaxing... had to use my pinesol on the tables and chairs to get rid of the flies.. they were the biting kind and it did get rid of them... we got to see some of the repair work the owners had to do on the property and then when we drove down the mtn we saw a lot of the damage- whole cliff sides came down into the river bed... huge trees... can't even imagine what it was like before this- they have been clearing stuff for a year now.. and no where near done...
We are off to see our financial guy and a lawyer this morning - doing wills and poa's will be really glad when all this is done...
Well off to get my paperwork together and see what else I can get done before we go...

I am glad you had a good time, Nana. And had a fix for the flies. It is interesting to see what Mother Nature does to our environment.

Good morning. Pretty slow here at the plastic store. I've dusted, dry mopped, and straightened all the shelves. Sore from my fall yesterday but not too bad. Sad that my days off had to come to an end.

Hi everyone---yes it is sad that holidays come to an end---
personally I had once thought that a day would come where I got to go on "vacation" much more often than when we were younger--but I do not see that happening any longer. So I am happy when people I know get to do that--hurrah for you both.
I got mom home & her surgery was uneventful. The "tumor" was a low grade cancer but it was so small & they got it so early that they are not concerned.

Good morning.
Glad everything went o.k. Junie.
The high temps and humidity are killing me....it is unbelievable the amount of elderly being hospitilized because of it. There is not an air conditioner to be found anywhere in any of the stores.

Your MIL is moving out of her apartment, Carol? I am glad you got up in time to get some day in, Cheryl. I am on my way out. I need to take a stick to myself to get moving when I need to go out. Any little excuse and I'll stay home again.

She is allowed to be in a wheel chair there, but she has to be ble to gt in & out herself. She is not going to be a happy camper when she finds this all out....I am not telling her....

Morning, I think we got most of our financial stuff done finally... we met with a lawyer yesterday and set up wills, living wills- power of atty's and a trust ... not cheap but had to be done- protect each other and makes sure state doesn't get what ever we have left... told the kids not to expect a whole lot left- want to live long enough to spend it all...and then go on...LOL! We had wills done when kids were young but it was time to redo them...
It is hot here this week too- was 97* yesterday, to hot to be outdoors for sure... I think summers are getting hotter every year and less snow too in winters... it is so hazy here they have a plane flying taking ozone measurements... when we drove toward downtown, we could barely see the skyscrapers downtown... sad...
Well day is half gone and I have done nothing yet- boys are supposed to call when they are ready to come here.. so better get something done before then...
Have a good day all!

Sounds like a good deal, Nana. Enjoy your boys. Carol, that is a tough conversation for anyone to have. Have you chosen an alternative spot for her? Do tell her it is temporary until she can care for herself well enough to return to the assisted living. Even though it may be a different apartment. Give her something to strive towards. It may never happen but a carrot is better than your are stuck with this the rest of your life. Goals make people happier (and it also makes it not your fault so much).

Yes it is a tough conversation, Tina. The thing is my husband doe snot deal well with this stuff...so, I have to do a lot myself and then I have to deal with him being a bear......plus in the mean time, his Older by 10 years brother, is off living far away doing nothing to help but issuing edicts & checking check book entries.... I could have killed my mom--(figurativly)--she was telling Rod just how much $$ I would inherit (as of last friday) if she were to die...he does not need to know that there will be extra $$ around for him to use---so I made a joke of it & said well mom, how come you are alive then---so we all laughed & changed the subject. In Mom's defense, we never had much growing up & it makes her proud that there might be a bit for her children when she is gone. My sister & I both tell her to just spend it if she needs /wants to-------I do not know how my brother feels.....BTW: We are not talking about a lot of $$ here...she is just pleased there is any left to share with her kids.

Yes, I think so too, Tina. I am going tonight to see my cousin's daughter--(we 'adopted my cousin many years ago), so as my cousin is called "Aunt" by our children, We are called Aunt by Amy. At any rate she sent me a message about how to care for a succulent she bought. I called her & we spoke. So tonight I am going to see just what she has growing & what she is doing. I am hoping I can give her some good advice.

Yesterday my friend told me that her mother in law got a reverse mortgage on her home. She's not exactly sure how this works but her MIL told them that when she dies or has to be put in a home the bank gets the house so for them not to count on it as an inheritance. My friend is good with that and I would be too. I don't think children should think they are owed anything after their parents are dead. My only concern with this is if her MIL spends most of the money what will they use in the event she does need to go to a nursing home. Don't most people end up using their house as collateral or whatever it's called to be put into a nice nursing home?

I am not altogether sure how reverse mortgages work, but I have heard similar. I do know that medicare does not cover all of the cost of long term care and SS doesn't much cover the difference. So most people have to sell their homes.

Hi all.
Goods gosh, a reverse mortgage might be fine at the time but as you stated, if you leave your home and can't pay it back...you lose it.

yep. I have been working on Nursing home stuff of late-- If you have any money at all, YOU have to pay the nursing home...Right now my MIL's therapy in a nursing home was rediculous in cost. We got an EOB for over 10,000.00 just for 19 days in April. Now while I am assuming that this also covers her room & board, and as it is therapy medicare does cover it at 100%, still that is a LOT...her care in the future should she stay there is MUCH higher than her costs at the assisited living--which was around $2550. a month just for her apartment, utilities & her meals. She still had to pay for a phone, medications, insurances & such. Now my husband, as the one responsible for her, has to sign papers saying he understands what the charges are & he will pay them..(I am greatful that he can write checks form her account)...When she has NO money, then her bills will be paid for her by medicare (I guess that is who). So, if you did not have a house, then I guess it would not matter--if you went to a nursing home, the state would have to pay, your kids would not have to pay for you.
Right now my sister's FIL is in the same nursing home & the kids are having trouble b/c he owns a house..which could be sold, but one of the grandkids & his family are living in it. It is crazy--you work all your life & then you have nothing anyway...
\I have a meeting today at the home on this very subject.

John was responsible for his aunt Glenna as she declined. We managed to save her house by paying off the mortgage she had on it. And sold it not too long after she passed away. We did that to give her that 'carrot' to recover and get better. Medicare and her supplemental insurance covered the nursing home care. There was absolutely nothing leftover for any personal items or clothing. We paid for clothing (and diapers), haircuts, etc. Many of her clearly marked clothing items got 'lost' in the laundry even though I brought much home to clean. I picked her up for many of her appointments for hings that weren't covered by the home, like podiatry care. It was an interesting education on the fate of the elderly from a different standpoint for me. I have worked in a couple of homes as a caregiver in my distant past.

I can tell you how it works, well, how it works in Illinois anyway. Marie will have to pay for her own care in the Nursing home as long as she can afford to do so. Now, when she is down to between 10 & 15 thousand dollars in her account, we need to file for medicade. THEY will pay for her. She is only allowed to have $2000.00 in assets (I assume they mean cash?). BUT as it takes so long for the application process, it is advised that she start when she has the above mentioned amount....In the end ALL of her $$ minus $30.00 a month, will go to her care in the home in order for them to pay. So, lets say she is out os assets & cash but she gets $1000.00 a month from Medicare. She gets $30.00, and the home gets the rest of the $1000.00---after that medicade will pay. I am assuming medicade will also pay for her medications. I also know how this is ..in Illinois...... I know from getting my mom's assets all in order when my dad passed---if you had some money/other assets..& put it in your children's name--it is still considered yours for 5 years. So really, I guess if you have no home no problems really... \

Yes, it works similar to that here. Except her house could stay in her estate for some reason as long as no one was living in it. That seemed odd to me because a renter would mean more that a person could contribute to their own care. I am getting ready to go to bed.

They tried that situation here with the nursing homes, thankfully it only stayed in affect for two years. Now you can just sign over your home to a family member...but you still can't have any amount of money in the bank. Whether you have a pension or such you can still go to a nursing home, if you have no money than the government pays....either way you are given $130 a month for personal items and the government takes the rest of your monthly income no matter how much it is.
Some people don't like that idea but it assures that no one can be turned away so that is a good thing.

Good morning. It is hot here. Coolers get turned on early these days to try to keep up. I will be going out today, a couple of times. I don't like going out in the triple digit heat. But it needs to be done.

Good Morning.
We are having a cool spert here. It is over-cast & feels damp, as if it might rain. The perfect day to work outdoors. I am stuck inside waiting for a phone call for Rod, so nothing will get done outside until that call comes. I think I will see what I can find to clean inside here while I wait.
Sounds much more resonable there than how it is here, Sunny. I am sure that marie would be much happier with $130.oo a month than $30.00. She would just die if she could not give birthday checks to people. She is lucky though that extras like the beauty shop are added to her monthly fees, so the $30.oo is strictly pocket $$$. For now she is a private pay though.

I put off my late morning trip out to town. But I have to get out and drop Jonni off at the train station in a half hour or so. Not looking forward to that trip.
