The orange is a nectar mix made for orioles. Its a sugar water too. Those orange feeders are especially for orioles too. Larger holes for them to get their beaks in.

guess what----just a few minutes ago--I had an oriole at my hummer feeder. ---(First time I ever saw one in my own yard)--- So after he left & ran out & put 2 orange halves out---now I am wondering if I take the snap in yellow "daisy" plastic inserts out of one of my extra hummingbird feeders, will the opening be large enough for the oriole??? They are so very pretty----

Thorn runs out and quickly ties another plastic Oriole decoy to JunieGirl's Hummer feeder and runs away snickering, "Boy, I really tricked her!"

LOL well well thorny---you really made me laugh--it is a shame the husband is sleeping, because I would have liked to bust out loud laughing!~!!! I'm still grinning ear to ear---
but seriously---is there a way I can know if the opening of my extra hummer feeder, sans the flat plastic "daisys", would be big enough for the orioles. And it is a good thing that Wrennie put up pics of her birds, else I would not of known what I saw so quickly. (Thanks Wrennie!!)

I'm not sure I NEVER get Orioles in MY yard although we do have them here in Nashville. I dont have enough forest and/or mature trees to attract them. They are more of a forest/ woods bird. I have seen an Orchard Oriole at a Hospital pond a mile and a half from me, but NONE in my yard YET.

well, Thorny I am , well pleny old enough, & this is the first time I had ever seen an oriole anywhere. But I am down a dead end street that has a line of large trees to the north of my house and my husband tells me there is a pond at some point to the north as well--not that i have ever seen it!! So maybe that helps. the only other exciting bird I have ever seen was a Red-Eyed Vireo--it swooped in ate some from my feeders & was off--bless him for staying long enough for me to ID him. I always assumed he was just 'passin thru".

A Red-Eyed Vireo Is the MOST common songbird in American Forests in Summer. Here the Keyword is FORESTS. You won't find them in the suburbs like where I live. They are very pretty, but somewhat elusive birds.

well when I saw the Vireo was back when we lived on 5 acres in the country-- lots of fields, trees and the like around---
but like I say, I had not ever seen him before & did not ever see him after that day.--so I assumed he was just passin thru. I was always happy that I happened to be washing dishes & looking out at the time he chose to stop by.
its past my bedtime now---nighty night all---

Junie the holes would be large enough for the orioles beaks but likely you'd get bees/wasps in there too. There are relatively inexpensive oriole feeders available. I think my least expensive I have at my store now is $15, but I can get one that sells for $11 and up to $65! As you see in Pamelas first pic orange halves work well. They love grape jelly too.

If you make your own feed for in them (like in hummingbird feeders) make sure to put in some Orange Flavoring (available in the baking aisle) as they lvoe the orange. And like Wrennie said....GRAPE JELLY!!! OMG I go through the HUGE jars of Sam's Choice Grape Jelly in the spring when the Oriole's are passing through to go up North. Those are the 2 things Oriole's LOVE!! Orange halves, and Grape Jelly!! The post the Orioles are on in the picture is about 10' from the front window, I have to be careful moving around to get their picture, as they are skittish and will fly off before I can get them. I've gotten as many as 13 Orioles in a picture at a time. They are so gorgeous!!
