I have to pull the carrots later today...then the garden will be empty.

I need to pull the carrots too. I might not have lettuce this year. It's too hot to plant now and I have a feeling it's going straight to too cold.

It's been in the low 60s during the day, then mid 40s at night; we just have our tomatoes out still, which seem to be doing just fine currently.

To still have tomatoes, how wonderful !

Gosh jealous of you James. Nothing like a fresh tomato.

I'm glad now that I haven't planted lettuce yet after hurricane Michael came through today. If I had planted seeds they would have been washed away and if I planted plants they would have been beat down and drown. It's supposed to cool off so maybe I can plant them this week.

You can tell that the cold weather is starting to get to the two tomato plants, but they're like 6 1/2' tall and still producing.

That is amazing to see tomato plants that tall.

They hit me in the head as I walk under, lol. Definitely the largest tomato plant I've ever grown.

You are one lucky man indeed. I may well just add tomato plants to pots next year...

Well, my season is officially done. Yesterday I raked, removed the debris and leveled off the garden plot once again.

That sounds kind of sad, Sunny. Did you get as much canned as last year? More?

I got more canned this year...the above ground produce grew amazingly.

I've still got okra producing and 2 days ago I put out some lettuce, spinach, and radishes. Found out the red ants weren't murdered when the ant lady came before the hurricane. I told her I thought she was spinning her wheels since it had started to rain while she was doing it and she said "no no the rain won't affect this chemical." Not true. The ant man is here again today. I also found out that crickets makes nests in the ground. I have 2 areas that remind me of ant piles but the dirt looks a little different and he said it was cricket nests. Who knew.

I would have thought that crickets are a good thing..am I wrong ??

I had no idea they nested in the ground either...we only see crickets here for a short time in the Fall.

I don't like crickets at all. I'd rather have a snake in the house than a cricket.

The okra is still going strong. We ate some tonight and I froze some too.

I wish the farmers market here was open on the weekend. But no, it is on Thursday afternoons. I guess I will have to wait until summer when my DD is home to get to go.......

Junie soon the grans will be old enough for you to take to the farmers market. My group loves going. I should have sold okra at mine this year 😁

Here we have a community popup market that happens every Sunday from 9:30a-2p in downtown Milwaukie (Milwaukie Farmers Market); its huge, like a little fair, but when its over the area turns back into a giant parking lot.

Usually it's it fun to go to the various form farms around, but it's a fun little place outside of Portland (like 6mi from downtown Portland).

Unfortunately, the big city is moving expanding more and more, and less families are taking on generational farms :(

The expense for farming is more than what a person makes here. I had a cattle buyer come here this week and offer me $1 lb for my cows....We are farming at a loss at that price.

We try hard since this farm has been in the family since the 1860's...and yes, that is the age of our barn. It is turning out to be an expensive hobby instead of an additional income sadly.

Its really sad here, none of the family members tend to want to take on multi generational farms, so this great fertile farmland is being trucked out when the families sell the farm, so that they can bring in fill dirt, sand, and gravel so that these huge housing communities can go in... I guess the bigger problem is that this is an area of 350k-400k homes, and the newest of these 5 communities (just down the street) are 500k+ houses; and now they figured they couldn't make a profit on that and sold to another builder that's going to "try" for 650k houses.

I sense nothing good for property values out here, especially when no one can afford these new properties.

So far the farm next to my house isn't being worked on, but various developers have been trying to buy it up for even more houses since I was a kid... I think the next closest isn't for several miles; I remember a day when there was fertile farm land everywhere around here.

Yes I remember that time as well. When I was dating my husband, one night he said, eventually, Edwardsville and Hamel will meet. Then there was about 15 miles of country dividing the 2. Now while there is still some countryside, there are big new houses dotted all along that road. I have to wonder what we will all eat eventually.

It's happening all around us too. Big parcels of land 300 - 400 acres for sale. The parents have died off and the kids would rather have the cash. Guess we'll all end up eating at McDonalds.

I hate McD's...I better keep this farm going.

I enjoy the occasional burger; but I'd rather use fresh beef vs a fast food place, lol

My husband loves fast food. I used to think he liked a good burger, but I think it could be that he likes food fast and it used to be cheaper, so there is that.

I myself like real silverware, & dishes, and I like being waited on. I am also NOT a bread person.

Trey and I enjoy the process of cooking; we go in the kitchen and cook together and talk. We get to spend time together, and he gets to learn a valuable skill.

He dislikes that, out of the four days in a month that he spends with his mom, she doesn't cook at all; they just do fast food.

Trey knows that he's going to his moms for Thanksgiving this year, but is looking forward to coming home because I'll still spend the countless hours cooking (even if no one is here to enjoy it with me), so he'll get left overs of his favorite dishes.

Sounds to me as if you are doing a great job raising your kids. Actions speak louder than words.

You make me want to cook. I am hoping to go back home the weekend after Thanksgiving for a Dudley Thanksgiving. However it is usually Italian dishes, as in theory we all just ate Turkey and the trimmings on the Thursday before. So I may cook a pared down meal here for the 2 of us on Thanksgiving..

I usually do a Turkey with stuffing for Thanksgiving and a Ham with au gratin potatoes for Christmas; I like green bean casserole, Trey loves au gratin, and Aubree just wants to eat lol.

I love a good green bean casserole as well. If it is just us I usually make either a few turkey legs or turkey breast and then all the usual trimmings. We shall see this year. I do so hope that there is a Dudley THanksgiving this year...If there is I will not miss having Thanksgiving myself.

I roasted a turkey for years and one day Johnny told me he really didn't like turkey. Which prompted Shelley to tell me the same thing. Ginger rarely eats me and neither do I. So I stopped fixing a turkey. We do like the trimmings though. We do like a green bean casserole too Junie.

I'd eat turkey as often as I could if I could afford it...it is the priciest bird that a person can get here.

I am trying to sparingly use my frozen/processed garden veggies. It seems that no matter how much I put away...it seems that it might not last the Winter season
