Both my neighbor and I planted pumpkins this year that I started from seed and he already has some pumpkins while all I have is flowers. I planted mine about 3 weeks before he did and are both using the same dirt. Here's my question, while I follow all the suggested ways of growing them(ie; drip system, nutrients,), all he does is have a sprinkler that barely gets the dirt wet and uses nothing in the way of fertilizers, why does he have pumpkins already and I have nothing but flowers? I noticed that underneath my flowers there seems to be something growing but then it just dries up and goes away.

sometimes it is just luck. He might have better soil to begin with or more sun.

Same soil and same amount of sun, we live next to each other and the soil was brought in a truckload. It could still be luck though. I'm not jealous, it's the fact that I am doing everything right and he is essentially doing everything wrong which almost makes me think that all the things we are suppose to do is worthless.

Could your ground be getting too wet with the drip system? Did you both plant the same amount of seeds in the same size areas? Pumpkins don't like crowding. I think you need to figure out what is growing under you flowers. When it dries up and goes away does it stay gone or come back? Is it under each flowe?
