Sunny, My dad loved raw turnips. His dad would grow them. Mom cooked and mashed them ....once. to me they tasted like regular mashed potatoes that had water substituted for the milk. Thankfully mom did not cook and mash them ever again

I think you are right, Bestofour. I think I will do that.

Bestofour, the turnip was o.k. I do not like radish so I'll only grow a small amount next year....but DH loves them. Next year I'll grow the real turnips for cooking as well. Junie, I love mashed turnip and carrots cooked together.

Junie, do you not like turnips or just that variety?

Sunny: I have only had the white round turnips. As I remember, they had a purple root end ? They did taste a bit like a radish when raw. I know my mom made the mashed turnips like you would make mashed potatoes but as I said they tasted as if she had used water instead of milk. She used milk. I have no wish to try them again.

Our cooking turnips are a Laurentian variety, they are yellow and sweet when cooked.

Do turnips have a strong taste that sort of take over the taste of potatoes?

IMO cooked turnips tasted just like potatoes. It was just that the flavor of mashed turnips tasted ,(,to me) as if mashed potatoes had been made with butter and water. raw IMO just like a mild radish. What say you, Sunny ??

Junie, a true yellow turnip does not have any radish taste. It is a unique sweet, earthy flavor that is delicious. I usually cook it in with my carrots due to having less pots to clean but it is good on its own as well. Bestofour, it definately takes over the taste of potatoes. It was always a staple back in the day because they keep so well.....they'd even grow them to help feed animals in Winter.

Good afternoon, I spent the day dealing with the lawn and weedwacking, the grass is growing like the first of July.🤔

I plucked some carrots today.😋

I like radishes. Bet I'd like turnips.

I did some yard work this morning but came in around 12:30 when it got so hot. Brought in 1 tomato and some cucumbers.

My foot is still hurting. I went to my local Dollar General did my shopping put away my items AND then I sat with my foot.up until it was time to help the girls with their homework, made supper and then went out and watered everything.

I sit a lot these days so my foot can rest. It has not healed as of yet. But it is better than it was.

Did you reinjure yourself lately?

oh no not at all. I am just real slow at healing as one must walk every day. Rod wants me to have it x-rayed. but I do not trust. the Drs. here. I will be thinking of it as time goes on.

Junie tell me again how you originally hurt your foot.

Did I tell you guys that I bought the prescription that cost $421.62? The cream that was $60.00 helped a tiny bit but the instructions say use 2-3 times a day so it wears off and I was still waking at night. Maybe I didn't give it enough time but I had to do something. I took my first pill this morning and I've been sooooooo sleepy that I can barely function but I'm hoping I'll get used to it and the pain does seem to be more than a little bit better.

I really don't know what I did to my foot, Bestofour. Around the 3rd week in July I went out to dig my potatoes. When I came in and got cleaned up, I felt fine.
But in the morning when I got up I could barely walk on it Some days it gets worse but I will say that many days it seems to be a bit better. I have been taking your advice and I keep my shoes off and rest that leg up on my couch whenever I can.
my DH said perhaps I should go to the Dr. and get an X-ray, but IMO these Drs. down where I live are not the best option. I will still be thinking about what I should do.

Sorry you had to actually get the more expensive meds, Bestofour. I hope that the sleepiness wears off and that the pills give you the relief that you need. How often do you take the new pills ?

I'm supposed to take the pills twice a day but I'm not sure I'll be able to do that if I need to go somewhere during the day. I don't think it's safe for me to drive.

Junie, I agree with Sunny. Let your foot rest or it will never get better.

Are the pills able to be cut in two?

yes Sheri...you should know ..if there is a score on the pill it can be divided. Sunny had a point. perhaps you could take 1/2 a pill twice a day. ??

No the pills are not to be cut in half. Specific directions to not do that even though with a pill cutter it could be done. I'm sort of afraid to try it though since it's mentioned. I got a call from the neurologist this afternoon and took the first available appointment, October 20th, at one of their offices about an hour from me in South Carolina, but I don't want to wait any longer than I have too. There's an office here in Monroe but the first available appointment isn't until December. I'm going to ask for a Botox injection. Sure hope the doctor doesn't want me to jump through all the hoops again and makes me wait.

Maybe the medication can't be guaranteed to be divided in that one pill. Yes, taking the October appt is best. Here one can go get Botox injections for migraines within a week, my DD tried it twice but it did not work for her.

I don't know why we can't get doctors appointments anymore. It seems all medical facilities are booked out for months. That's why our emergency departments are so full of non-emergent cases - the doctors offices are full so people go to the ED.

Know what happens when a person is retired and lives alone? You don't know it's a 3 day weekend until your daughter calls and tells you they're going to Arkansas to see the Razorbacks play because they don't have to be at work Monday.

you are exactly right, Bestofour. I often do not know which day it is. All ( or most) of my days are just the same. That situation makes it hard some days. Glad to hear it is not just me.

today the kids get out of school at noon. I guess that works nicely for people who are going out of town for the long weekend.

about Drs. Here unless you are very lucky you end up going to an urgent care facility and seeing a nurse practitioner or a physician's assistant when you are actually sick. One cannot get in to see my Dr. unless you have a appt for several months ahead. So basically she is for maintenance visits. Makes me crazy. it was not like this back home. AND if you end up in the hospital here....a "hospitalist" (Dr. on staff at the hospital) does your care..you never see your Dr.
....I do not appreciate the world we live in these days. at least not the world here is S. Missouri.

Monday is a holiday here as well, Labor day. Each day is the same...cook, clean, repair and repeat. 🙄 If it wasn't for marking the day off on the calendar to keep track of garbage and recycling pick up....I'd be at a loss to distinguish between any of them.

Healthcare is a disaster everywhere. You have to fend and fight for yourself it seems.

I will say, at least when we lived at home my family always got together for a meal on Holidays...So at least there was that.

Gathering for the meal on holidays is one of my dreaded tasks. I'm at the point in my life that I am so over all the bickering that I'd rather be by myself. I get a headache even thinking about it.

we bickered little. thing is my sister and my cousin are my friends as well. I am a social person and I miss them greatly.

Rod is like you..he prefers to be away from such gatherings.

I like gatherings...as long as my mother and DD do not attend together. One is fine, add the second and it is an embarrassment in public.

I've had a black swallowtail hatch out of his chrysalis and my window boxes are still full of caterpillars. I'll try and post pictures. I was getting ready to redo the boxes because the caterpillars have destroyed the plants but I'm going to wait until I don't see any more caterpillars.
