wavy Reading is a huge hobby of mine....I have tons of books....what are you all reading right now?

I'm currently on the first "In the Garden" book from the Nora Roberts Trilogy......Triss didn't you buy them and read them a while back? Did you like them? I'm about halfway thru the first book and so far it's okay, not blowing me away but not bad.

Tonya, I bet audio books would work great!!! You can even get them from the library for free!

What are you favorite things to read?

I love pioneer type books, stories told from the olden days or Mennonite farms and such.

I hate romance books though.

I like the genre too Tamara.....I have a book upstairs that takes place in Amish Country....it was pretty good. thumbup

My favorites though are vampire books.....and chic lit like Bridget Jones Diary. I don't do harlequin type books, but I do like Nora Roberts.

Do you read often? It's a huge passion of mine. I go thru about a book every couple of days.

I used to Loz, but there is no library near by and books are expensive. I try to hit a few yard sales in the summer and buy some then.

My daughter is an avid reader, she reads a book every few days as well. The girls at school share so she only has to buy a book month and they switch off.

She's a VC Andrews fan.

I've read most of VC Andrews work.....I don't like a lot of her newer stuff though....she passed away years ago and there is someone that writes in her name now and it's just not as good to me.

Yard sales are GREAT places to get cheap books. That and the Goodwill. I used to get a ton of them there when I lived in my apartment years ago.

If they weren't so heavy I'd send you some of mine, I have hundreds and hundreds of books.

I've read Nora Roberts but I find her storylines to be predictable. When VC Andrews died, whomever is writing on her behalf just recycles the same story over-and-over. I used to read lots of Dean Koontz but even he is extremely predictable. So now, I'm author-less.

I will have to check out the Goddess books, and when I was 10 I started Lasher by Anne Rice and my mother took it away. I need to remember to get that so I can finish it. I got about half way through. When I was little I was homeschooled and would read about 5-10 adult books a week. We lived in a small town and it was always so frustrating to have to order books in from bigger libraries. Thank god I'm in a bigger town now!

I love this thread, please post your favorite books and authors, I'm always looking for something good to read (and for the time to read it in). I don't do romance. There is not a romantic fiber in my body. lol

Very true Sarah.

Kenny, I think your choice of books is just fine---doesn't matter if you're a guy or woman.

My fav. author is Laurell K. Hamilton. She's amazing. Her Anita Blake series is about vampires but mostly romantic, not scary stuff really.

Her Merry Gentry series is about fairies....they're very romantic too, but can get sort of dark.

I'm waiting for the next book in each series and it's killing me!!!!! boohoo

lol kenny, guys can read, and like romance...

one of my favorite coworkers is a young man who has been married about 3 years. i'm always telling him things like "you want some extra brownie points?" and then giving him romantic hints. he wants to be romantic, but doesn't know how! so if you read, you'll know how when the time comes thumbup

and my husband likes mysteries as much as i do!

loz - I read Nora Roberts garden trilogy - I liked it pretty much. Just finished her vampire series, but I have a real problem with it!!! You know how it starts off with an old man telling the story to children??? Well... really... one would not be telling a romance story to children in such great detail of the romantic parts, you know? Since I used to be a pre-school teacher, that aspect of this series really really bothered me!!!

I'm not into vampire stories, but this series was not bad otherwise. I need to find something fun and interesting to read next...

Anyone reading the new book by Mitch Albom - author of Tuesdays with Morrie, and The Five People You Meet in Heaven? It's called "for one more day". I saw him on Oprah last Wednesday and put a hold on the book immediately at my library. Just got around to reading it today - am half way through and have been crying since PAGE ONE!!!

WOW, does this book ever hit home with some of the feelings and things. It's a very easy read, but not exactly what I need to be reading right now with "stuff" going on here for several months now... I'm going to finish it, because I do think it's good though.

Anyone know of a good humorous book?

My all time favorite humorous books are The Shopaholic series by Sophie Kinsella! I laughed hysterically through almost all of them. Plus the main character, Becky, is English and I liked that.

I haven't read the new Mitch Albom book. Five People you Meet in Heaven put me off him a bit....I didn't like it, but I adored Tuesdays with Morrie.

I just finished DarkFever by Karen Marie Moning...It was excellent and all about the Fae---the Seelie and Unseelie Court--and was pretty dark at times but it was still good.

My brother got me a barnes and noble gift card for my birthday so I finally was able to get some new books. I've been going through reading withdrawl. Anyway, I got the next book int the Merdith Gentry series, I got the first book to the Anita Blake series, got a Stephen King book I've been wanting to read and I got Bram Stoker's Dracula. I've always heard that it was a really good classic and it was only $3! Now I just have to wait for them to be shipped to my house, should have them all by Thursday. The next thing is deciding which one to read first.

With all the trouble with my car I haven't been able to afford any books so I told my brother that's what I wanted for my birthday. I'm proud that he actually got me something. I've read the first 2 Meredith Gentry books and I have the 4th one but didn't want to read it before getting the 3rd one. I was going to get the 5th one as well but it doesn't seem to be available in paper back yet so I got the 1st Anita Blake one instead. I know you said those are really good books. I'm so excited, I want them to be at my house right now.

I like them! If you like Merry Gentry then you will like Anita Blake...there are a lot of similarities in them. There are LOTS of books in the AB series....about 15 I think.

Happy Reading Cheryl! I hope you get them really soon! BTW, I HATE reading out of series order too....that happened to me once with the Anita series....I didn't get the next one I needed, I got the one after that....so I read it and went back and read the last one...but I don't like doing that at all.

I love to read---I esp. like series type so I know if i will end up liking a book or not.

I am mainly into Mystry so i can try to figure out the "who did it" myself.

I read Rex Stout-- Caludia Bishop- Marcia Mueller, Diane Mott Davidson
and I have every Agatha Chisty book she ever wrote. The rex stout (Nero Wolfe) I read again & again--I also have the DVD's of the movies that were on A & E.

Then there is the 7 or do of the NW books put out by Robert Goldsboro---not so good but not so bad---

My husband & I read various books--taking turns reading chapters aloud, so we both get to enjoy the book-

if I had a book type encyclopedia set, i would be reading those as well.

love just to read---- bop

if you like funny mysteries, joan hess's maggody series will tickle you pink. i love it. and her claire malloy series is pretty good too.

i tried a new author this week, (new to me) janet evanovich and really liked that book. it was called hot stuff and was sort of a mystery, with a mystery type romance thrown in. at one point i was laughing out loud.

i've read all sue grafton, all agatha, and all joan hess, and quite a few added, but i like "lite" mysteries myself.

the really graphic ones, like patricia cornwell and dick francis do. but the lite ones like joan hess are nice. and that one by janet evanovich that i read this week was really just funny. the short of the plot line was about a woman who was trying to live up to her own dreams while juggling her families desire to get her married off. i know, there isn't much mystery in that, but if you through in a roommate that is a thief... it gets good without being gory.

I LOVE TO READ! I have never checked this part of the forum out until today!

I am actually in my last year at Boise State University (it will be my ninth year, BTW...) to be an English teacher!

Tamara, I saw that you like pioneer novels, and if you haven't ready My Antonia by Willa Cather yet, I really suggest you do, (I got my copy at Barnes and Noble for about $5). I read it this last year, and I really loved it! It's a classic, and it's all about two children growning up on the Missouri Prarie. Good book.

I like literature. I am not into a lot of non-fiction, but some REALLY interesting stuff will get me hooked. (I like history, so history books that are almost like novels will get me hooked, as well as some biographies.)

I loved the Mrs. Pollifax series of spy mysteries. Anything by Phyllis Whitney is a treasure.
Dodge, I LOVED all of the James Herriot books, and read his biography, but I kind of lost the old interest when I learned that the books were highly fictionalized.
I had the same let-down when I found out that all of the Little House books were also mostly fiction.
They're all still classic reads though.

That is news to me, fictionalized.....I understood they were for real years back and the true life Herriot lived.

Well there were lots of drunk stories, but if you love animals, it is heartwarming.I have one here"Dog stories" and I refuse to give it up.. I just bought a friend a Herriot book at the Book store and she loves it.

You miss some heart warming stories.

Dodge, James Herriot was a real person, and a vet as he described in his books.
I meant that the stories were fictionalized. In other words, one zany character in a book might be a composite of two people whom Herriot really knew.
Or, a touching piece about an animal might be behaviors from more than one animal.
Herriot's real name was James Wight. There is a biography written by his son and includes many photographs of Herriot and the people and places of his life.

I still love THe Herriot books......They aren't really fiction like the Fiction storys on the market today......(My idea of fiction) Stupid love stories in fiction, like my darling has come out of the closet just in time to ride me off on a grey horse into the sunset.........Trash.

He did actually at some time or other do most of the stuff he says.. Maybe not in the style you consider......It doesnt matter how it is said.. But would you have any idea how boring a book would be if it involved only daily doing?/

PS......What is the name of his sons book I will hunt it down?

Love Herriot..Or jimmie wright.

Sorry, us farmers stick together..

Right now I'm reading the Dark Hunter series by Sherrilyn Kennyon. Very good...at least for me, because I like vampire/werewolf books....and this has an ancient twist to it with Greeks, and Romans and flashbacks in time.

Not sure what I'll switch to when I'm done this series....I hate finishing a series. It's so hard to find other good books.

I'm on the last story in Stephen King's Four Past Midnight. Then I'll get back to the Meredith Gentry series. I've only got a couple of books left before I'm out of things to read again. Guess I should start making a barnes and noble wish list.

My daughter (youngest @ 17) and I are re-reading each other chapters of the 6th Harry Potter so we can slide right into #7 more seamlessly. I had one of Kathy Reichs' early books about forensics (bloody murder and brainy scientist) that the TV series, "Bones" is based on. Unfortunately, HP won out and I still have to finish the Kathy Reichs book before it's due back at the library.

Anyone listen to audio books?

Has anyone read The Time Travelers Wife? It's very good. I really enjoyed it. Also love the Janet Evanovich books with Stephanie Plum. Too funny! Also liked Ergon, et all and lots of children's books, from picture books (what wonderful artwork!) and YA novels. I'm usually listening to an audio book while I garden or do housework and have one or two books at my bedside.

My own thought: The best things you can do for a child is teach them kindness, a love of reading, and the wonders of nature.

Does anyone read anything by Clive Cussler? he writes some very good action/adventure novels... all having to do, at least a little, with lost ships, the ocean, or something like that.. he's very good.. I can reccomend some titles, if anyone'd like..

Julianne, I didn't like The Time Traveler's Wife too much. It was enthralling for a while but toward the end I sort of lost interest.

Have you read A Thousand Splendid Suns?

No, haven't read A Thousand Splendid Suns. What's it about? Who is the author?

I think you missed out on the The Time Traveler's Wife. The ending was a bit of a twist. So many books, like movies, you can predict the ending. Which is fine with me; I like to see how writers get from beginning to predictable end, and if there's a twist, ooooo! I just love it.

Before I had children, I was a big fan of Stephen King. After my first child, they freaked me out! Same with his movies and the like.

Julianne, remind me about the Time Traveler's Wife. It's been a while and I thought that's why I didn't like it. I remember I like it to start with but the more I read the less I enjoyed it but now I can't remember exactly why.

Sometimes getting someone elses perspective helps. I read Oral History by Lee Smith (so did a friend) and neither of us liked it. A lady came to the library and did a discussion on it and we both wanted to re-read it. She got so much from it that neither of us saw. That's why I like a book club. So many different ideas.

I LOVED the Time Travelers Wife!!!! It was a little slow at first and jumped around a lot but once you get into it it's very enjoyable....but what one likes another doesn't....it's all different tastes....like I enjoy Vampire books....not really Ann Rice, but Sherilyn Kennyon and Laurell K. Hamilton. And I love time travel books too!!!! thumbup

Sheri, it was about a guy who time traveled, but not of his own volition. It just happened, any time, anywhere. He met a young girl during one of his travels. The story does bounce around and you sometimes have to shut the book and put your head back on straight. As the book progresses, the relationship and time frames get closer. I liked it for the story, but also because it was a different format than your typical book.

Has anyone read The Poisonwood Bible? Also a different format.

I haven't read that Julianne, I'm an avid reader--rather read than watch tv....I actually DO read more than just vampire/time travel books. lol I have hundreds of books here in my house. Is that a really good book, what do you mean by different format? Might have to give it a go.

A Thousand Splendid Suns is about Afghanistan and the lives of women there. It's a novel but the author, Khaled Hosseini, is from there so it's based on some truth. He also wrote the Kite Runner.

So I did something really wild and crazy the other day. I actually got a library card. I thought that the library by my house only had meter or paid parking lots around it, but what I've never noticed before is that they have their own underground parking garage. I can't believe I didn't know that. Part of the reason why I never had a library card, other than my misconceptions about the parking situation, was I thought you could only keep things out for a week at a time and sometimes I can't finish a book that fast. Well, the check out is 3 weeks. And I've just discovered half price books. I can't believe I haven't taken advantage of either of things before now. I must have been living in an online cave or something. Anyway, just thought I'd share.

very cool, Cheryl!

I'll be visitng my library[the one closest to me] much more once school starts.. i'd have to take the city bus there most of the time, but I get a full-fare metro-card [pays for the bus ride, i have no idea if that's what they're called throughout the country lol ] once school starts, so that wil ltake care of that.. lol

I've had a library card for ages, but don't use it often

My mother lives in a small town and used to have a local library where the parking lot wasn't crowded. Then several small towns in her area decided to make one mega-library (not in her town) and she doesn't like going anymore. It's too big and too crowded. My county commissioners want to make one central mega-library and the citizens are fighting it tooth and nail. I guess it saves money on staff and buildings - don't know if that's the reasoning behind this move. I don't like super stores, like super walmart, so I'm sure I won't like a super library if it comes to that.

Have you ever bought books at Amazon.com? You can get good condition books for pennies.

Sheri I get Amazon books a lot....I just got one a few days ago for 2 cents plus 3.49 shipping or something. lol Still not a bad deal considering the "used" book was in brand new condition.

I have a library card and mine is just right downtown 2 minutes away. I'm a regular. Have been since I was 7 years old. I'm number 37 in the registry. lol My one librarian friend ROCKS, she goes out of her way to find books I'd like and she's so great. Cheryl I'm so glad that you finally figured out your library situation. If yours is like mine you should be able to get DVD's out too. And I don't mean old titled stuff, ours has really new DVD's that we can check out for free for one week. So I get to see a lot of good new movies and get all the books I want.

If I ever get a job it will be at my library one day. Perfect job for me.

We have good DVD's at my library too. We can keep them a week now - used to be 3 days. I've applied for jobs at my library and they say I'm over qualified. I can't believe that. How can I be over qualified for a job I would like to do.

Has anyone else tried Half.com? It's part of e-bay and the books/audio/video items available can be very inexpensive.

Never tried that....I've had such good luck with books on Amazon(used) that I really haven't tried anywhere else. Although I'm in 2 book clubs...one's a science fiction one because I like fantasy stuff and vampires. I get the good sign up offer, complete my obligation ASAP and quit. lol

Almost all of the librarians here are older...except the one that hooks me up all the time. She's the best, friendliest librarian ever. She throws stuff on hold for me if she thinks I'll like it.

I just received notice that the library is holding The Time Traveler's Wife for me. Someone in here once said it was a good book so I thought I'd give it a try. I also wanted to know if anyone has read Garden Spells? If not, you should. It's a very good book, kind of quick and easy read but still very good. Now that I'm using the library is there any other recommendations that anyone has? What have your favorite books been?

Yes it is. But I would put it the category of believable fiction.

I really enjoyed the Time Travelers Wife. I thought it was really good.

BTW, Diana Gabaldon. Her Outlander series is spectacular. I mean I REALLY loved it so much. It has to do with time travel a bit....and once Dad finishes Laurell K. Hamiltons Vampire series I'm gonna see if he wants to read them. thumbup

ANYTHING by Janet Evanovich.she's really funny.her Stephanie Plum series is a hoot..."One for the money",'Two for the dough","Three to get deadly" and so on.....

Also, anything from Nora Roberts. if you like fantasy type stuff, the "Key trilogy" is really good.

Do you like it Kenny????? I've not heard of that. I liked the DaVinci Code book, but not the movie........and I didn't like Angels and Demons so much. I have the DaVinci Code PS2 game here, beat it but it was HARD. I had to cheat a lot. lol

I'm reading Karen Marie Moning's "Bloodfever"....about the faery courts and vampires and shades and creepy things....it's dark and good....second in a series.

The harry potter books i think they are awesome!!! i know its kinda childish with all the magic but i love them. I do nto like the movies ebcause they leave out alot of parts that i wouldve like to seen that were in the books. the movies seem to be getting crappier and crappier.... but love the books!

nope. We check them out at the library and then return them. I love going to my book club. Wish you all could come. Several people from my job go so we get a lot of different opinions. One of my co-workers is from Peru, one from Mexico City, one grew up totally in the south so it's an interesting group.

I remember you saying that before. They're trying to make one super library where my mother lives which will mean the library won't be convenient to her anymore either. I hope they don't do that to me.

dodge, I like to read and I think it's interesting to get others point of view -can't really do that online. Vocal expression adds so much. I read a book called Oral History, which I did not like at all. Had to make myself finish it. Then I heard other thoughts on it and had to re-think the whole thing. Turns out it is a good and interesting book. I was missing it though.

I finally broke down and went to Barnes and Noble as well as reserving a bunch of books from the library. The book I just started is called House of Leaves. It's supposed to be really creepy and disturbing, we'll see. I also got a couple of memoirs and I found someone near my house that is selling books for $1 each so I get to go pick up 6 Stephen King books I haven't read yet for only $6!!!

Cheryl, have you ever read JR Wards Brotherhood series?

I'm on the last book of 5 and it's SOOOOOO good! The first book hooked me and I stayed up until 4am reading that night.

I might buy them for my sister for her birthday because I know she'll love them also.

We do much reading aloud here.

Over Christmas break I read aloud the entire four books by Tolkein The Hobbit plus the triology. Maxi kept me supplied with cold water so I wouldn't lose my voice and we got through them (plus appendizes) in a week.

They are marvelous stories. Now he wants me to read them again, but I don't think so!

I think I am going to start reading him the popular Redbank series although I do not like books with the main characters being talking animals who possess human qualities. But these books are a hit among kids his age and teens, so we'll give them a try.

For myself, I enjoy reading Janet Evanovitch's series about Stephanie Plum, the bounty hunter. Having grown up in the Trenton area, I am familiar with all the places she describes. I also get a kick out of how she characterizes Trentonians so accurately and with such humor.

We were given two hands to hold, two eyes to see, two ears to listen & two legs to walk. But why were we given only one heart?
The other heart was given to another for us to find.

wow. that sounds like some heavy duty reading you did. I like to read to my kids as well. just today we hit a used book store and we all got some books. I got a couple of stephen king, son got a book called hatchet which is a newberry award winner and stowawy by karen hesse. I recognized hesse as being a good writter but I don't know about that particular book. daughter got 3 books in a series about horses...they are early chapter books 'sheltie' is in the title of those. last summer I read to them 'summer of the monkey's and 'holes'. Not in a week or two though, merme. I get exhausted reading aloud. I guess it took us 2-3 weeks on each book.

didn't know there was a book thread here. I just got two stephen kings today I haven't read. 'the girl who loved tom gordon' and 'the dark half'. I've always said 'i'm not much of a reader'. but I haven't read a stephen king yet I don't like. I also read some koontz. koontz books are a bit of a crap shoot for me. some of his works I'd say were better than king but some I read 3 chapters and never pick up again. anyone have any suggustions on other authors? good grief! I feel I should broaden my horizons a bit.
