I bought a hanging basket thinking it was petunias but the tag says Calibrachoa. Do they take the same care, do I pinch them back? Stumped on this one.

no, no pinching back is needed. they'll naturally spread out - kind of in a vining fashion - and hang over the sides of the basket. they'll continue blooming all summer.
i got them last year for the planters for my front steps...put them in and something else (taller) behind them and ended up taking the other stuff out because they grew so much and overtook the planter!
they need a good sunny spot and keep them evenly watered.

Thanks, I'm sorry I didn't buy another basket and take it apart to fill in two planters I have. Oh well, hopefully they'll have more when I go back.

Provide Calibrachoa with acidic soil. For fertilizing choose something formulated for acid-loving plants. Especially needed if leaves start to yellow or flowering slows. A good organic choice is Espoma Holly Tone. It's granular and slow acting so lasts longer when plants require a frequent watering schedule. Holly Tone is also used for marigolds, hydrangea, lily-of-the-valley, strawberries, bleeding heart and phlox in case any of these plants reside in your garden.

So, Can I use 20-20-20? That's what the lady at the garden center said to use in baskets. Mind you, I could tell she wasn't even a gardener just a worker.

i never fed them at all and they over-grew the containers they in (basic potting soil).
you might end up with some kind of monster plant if you do feed it!!

My man said there is no such thing as 20 20 20 fertilizer.
10 20 20 ......it is .. Half teaspoon in a hanging basket would be plenty.

Your man is wrong . It's a water soluble 20-20-20. You buy it in buckets.

Tamara - Have you purchased the product you refer to? If so, and its not open can you return it?
Holly tone is a 4-6-4 organic fertilizer with a higher middle number for plants with blooms. 20-20-20 salt based soluable fertilizers are not good for long term use.
Another consideration is the soil the plant is in. If it's a commerical mix it might have no fertilizer in it. If it's a newer mix containing fertilizer, that get's washed out quickly since containers need large amounts of water.

My plant is starting to get leggy, I'm gonna pinch a few stems back. It's getting straggly looking. I'm sure i have a fertilizer here with numbers close to that though. Gonna check.

Lowes and Home Depot, etc., their ads say that they have knowledgable staff, when really - they are just college kids with a summer job! That's why I have come to rely on you all!

Sad part is someone like me was turned down for one of those jobs because my french is a little rusty, so they hired a bilingual teen who has no clue what she is doing. makes no sense to me.

Maybe they think talking is more important than doing. Yes I read that story in Houston , Texas where an american with a degree, was passed over for a job there, couldn't speak Spanish////////////// b

The leggy branches might be due to a combination of to cool temps and a lack of any long periods of warm full sun. Pinching back is a good idea. MI weather has been terrible for seedlings and planting. To many consecutive days of wind, rain, cold and little sun. Even woody perennials are starting to look bad. The sun loving annuals in North country are probably wishing they were in Florida.

Lack of light causes all that. You need plenty of sun inside .My tomatoes were quite nasty and I put them all out in the garden.. Some did commit suicide......It was the late late snow and cold this year. It totally ruined my tulips.......Very few bloomers. There is always next year.

It was out during the day and in at night, I am doing the same.
Not so worried about it anymore, the cat climbed the pole and jumped in it. Now it's really straggly looking. I am clipping it back to see if it will regrow.

Tx also started last year requireing 1 yr Spanish to graduate. It use to be just 1 yr of a forgien language. They've helped make it the only choice as some schools ONLY do that language not choice of French or German.
Nice plant..looks like it would bloom more than petunias.
I will age ungracefully until I become an old woman in a small garden..doing whatever the Hell I want!
