A fact sheet published by the University of Florida's Cooperative Extension Service explains the differences between S. ovigerum (grown as an inedible ornamental plant) and white fruit varieties of S. melongena, which are edible:

Fruit color:
S. ovigerum fruit is white when immature but turn yellow as they mature.

S. melongena fruit remains white at maturity, some with a hint of green.

Fruit size:
S. ovigerum fruit typically remains small, resembling their namesake hen's eggs in size and shape.

S. melongena white varieties grow to typical eggplant size at maturity, significantly larger than the ornamental fruit.
_____________________________________________________
The above is what I was sent on the subject--
I have not gone to the web site yet, what does anybody think?? because-

I thought the S. Melongena was the edible(all be it bad tasting) one that turned a yellow coloring-- Now I am totally confused. :/

wondereggs directgardening.com

there was a bunch of info in here from everyone who grew em, i wrote some down.
they can be planted directly outside after frost or inside 6-8weeks before your last frost,
i know their tender annuals. when their 4-5 inches tall transplant. if you keep them in a container it should be 3 gallons pots.
liquid fertilizer every week
can take up to 5 months to egg out
purple flowers to white eggs to golden eggs.
to harvers eggs they need to be over ripe.

i had a lot of damping off pruoblems.so with my last two seedlings i used the 1/3 proxide to a gallon of water. and waterd it. so far so good!
good luck with yours! flwr

clapwhoo hoo mark!!!! thumbupyou got baby eggs! clap

Well, I finally found out what happened to that pot of wonder egg. It wasn't a critter at all, it was a Joey and his basketball. After taking a closer look at it I realized that it was missing soil and there were myterious little piles of extra soil in the garden area. Very slight but I knew something was off. I had asked the girls if anyone knocked over my plant and they said no. So yesterday I asked Joey if he accidentally knocked over my plant, he said it was his basketball and he did try to put it back the way it was so I wouldn't get upset. I told him I wouldn't get upset, I was just confused as to how it came to look that way, reassured him that it was fine, accidents happen, just let me know next time so I'm not thinking that we have a theiving critter out at night.

clap Good job Mark! Can't wait til mine get that big. They've only made it to about 5 inches tall, but they are still doing better this time around than they did the first time.

I am going to plant the seeds today---I have some peat pellet seed starters. Can I put them in a aquarium with a lid to make a grehouse?? I read about that but I thought perhpas all the glass might make it too hot?? does anyone have an idea?? should I go with a plastic bag??

Here is how most of us got ours to sprout:

Just barley cover the seed...like lay the seed on top of the soil and sprinkle a tiny amount of soil over the seed, then mist the soil good, place in a plastic bag, the aquarium might work as long as the moisture is high enough and no mold starts to form. Place in a warm area and the waiting begins, once the seeds sprout...Be for warned they can become root bound very quickly and if not transplanted quick enough you will lose your plant. Good Luck!!!

Comfrey--(Is it Bev??) wavy Thanks so much---I think I will try the bag thing--but I have to come up with something to hold it up.
--Cheryl said you all used a bag--I just wasn't sure, how to go about it--- why

RIght now the seeds are in the seed pellets---I did that because somewhere I read NOT to start them in real soil. I am hoping for the best. prayers

Great picture!!---Thanks for posting it---

I just used a zip lock bag...you can place the pellet pots inside a zip lock bag just watch for any sign of mold on the pots...If there is too moisture then unzip the bag and allow alittle air to get in the bag...Too much moisture looks like it rained inside the bag...if you water just mist with a spray bottle. Keep us updated on your progress and when you have sprouts we would love to see your seedlings. Good Luck and do not be discouraged these seeds can be really stubborn and take weeks to sprout. You have to have patience while waiting.

Those look awesome Comfrey. I must sadly say that my last one, that I didn't manage to kill while I was away is still way to small. I might try it again, once I've moved. They got too dry and the roots weren't developing properly. But seeing most of you were able to do it, I will try it again.

Thanks Comfrey-- thumbup--My zip loc bag does look like it is raining inside---tomorrow Am I will open it for a while, so as to let it dry out a bit. And thanks for telling me how I should water them--i wondered. Cheryl had told me about the being patient for sprouts to appear, but a reminder is always a good thing. And yes I will keep you all posted on how things are going. bop

I'm so glad so many people are having success with their wonderegg plants this year!

The few seeds that I had started indoors in March did not make it, and died shortly after sowing. BUT... I had a dried up, shriveled and hard egg laying on the surface of the pot that I was trying to overwinter from last year. A few weeks ago, I put this pot outside on my deck railing where it gets full afternoon sun. I then took the seeds out of the old egg, scattered them on the surface and just let it be.

Lookie at what I saw 2 days ago!!!
I hope there's still time for eggs to form for me this summer!

And here is the pathetic stem that is left from last year's plant.
It does have some new growths starting to branch out along the stem, and I'm hoping it will fill in with time.

Christy: Do you mean 1/3 cup peroxide to a gallon of water for watering or 1/3 of a gallon peroxide mixed with 2/3 gallon of water for 1 gallon total to water with??

thanks so much for getting back to me so soon with the "recipe" for the peroxide mixture. i assume all I need to do is have 1/3 amt of peroxide to 2/3 amt. of water, right??--Don't want to k make a gallon all at once-- Thanks for being happy for me---I am happy too. Tickled really--can't wait for them to grow eggs. bop

I just read up on how to care for the sprouts--and as they are not 2 inches high yet, I guess i am leaving them in their "tent" for now. I did put new "tent stakes" up so my little baby wonder eggs do not touch the top of the "greenhouse" they are in though.

Now me and my clean pots are just sitting & waiting for the WE's to grow some yet. I do so hope they continue to be healthy. I will keep everyone posted of their progress.
