I've never grown these before but I just got some seeds. So the question is since it is so late in the season should I direct sow? Or should I start them inside? And how much compost should I add to their soil if any? And how much water will they want? Boy do I have a bunch of questions.

I'm excited. I love the flavor of these.

I can't help with the seed starting question about this kind of pepper but we bought a 6 pack of them from a local nursery late last summer and they were great. I only had space in a long rectangular flower container and they didn't seem to mind at all. They grew up a little taller in a short time and just flowered & produced lots of good peppers and they didn't seem to mind that the soil dryed out fast in that container either.

To be honest these did better than the "Ace" bell peppers I had started from seed.

Enjoy!

That's great news. Then they should like their new home. I'll be starting them tomorrow then.

5 of them have sprouted. Out of six that's pretty good. Now I have to get out in the garden and figure out where they want to live lol.

I started the seedlings for the banana pepper with about 30 other seedlings for various plants in a mini greenhouse. Our Coastal winds knocked the mini greenhouse (a box with a clear lid) off my deck. All the plants were turned upside down, now I don't know what it looks like. I have so many of the seeds growing but I'm not sure where to place them in the garden boxes now. Do either of you have any pictures of your seedlings so I can tell which one is the banana pepper?

I broke my camera. But at the seedling stage they all look pretty much alike. You will have to wait until they have their first set of true leaves before you can tell them apart.

What all had you planted?

I had two bell pepper plants, 1 banana pepper plant, several lettuces and spinach plants, (I can identify the spinach.) I think I'm just going to start by putting the seeds directly into the ground now. We usually have a long growing season, so hopefully they will produce before the winter gets here. LOL!!
