Well it seems that my Oriole has returned and that he prefers my hummingbird feeder that I have modified for him by removing one of the " flowers" to make the beak opening larger. And that My Oriols feeder is preferred by my Hummers, and oh the resident Downy Woodpecker prefers the oriole feeder to seed---go figure---

Hello; I'am also a birder, and i've noticed some strange bed fellows like you. It must be Mother Nature playing tricks on us humans hahahah.....
I,ve seen morning doves in my finch feeders hanging on for dear life, while the finches are fighting with the blue jays and cardinals for black oilers...

Thorny staggers away from JunieGirl's nectar feeders where he has been drinking them dry of ALL the fermented nectar.

Oh Carol those birds are strange! I have a pair of tree swallows trying to check out a chickadee nest box, which is too small for them really. BF cut the hole larger last night, maybe they'll use it. ???
Hi swampfox/Don!
Aww thanks Thorny!!

LOL Thorny---Is fermented nectar anything like fermented "corn"?? So on one of your excursions to my feeders, have you met my male Hummer I've named Pete--he spends a large amount of time on my tomato cage that is next to the humminbird feeder. (& yep, I am now naming birds ) Wrennie: I hope for you & the tree swallows that your modified nest is accepted & used. I just love swallows---we used to have many at our old place--none here though

Corn Licker, as it's called here in the South, is sold in one quart fruit jars and is about 180 Proof (90% Alcohol). It tastes like canned corn and will burn if exposed to a flame.

Thorny: about the "corn licker"--is it safe to actually drink much of it??--I have only heard about it, not actually drank it.--I imagaine it would be a cheap drunk though. Wrennie: That is great news, so glad you have new "renters"--- Enjoy!!!

Good Morning all.
I just wanted to say that my Female Oriole was at the modified hummingbird feeder this AM--& she then went to the Actual oriole feeder and sat by it, not feeding, a bit and then flew away. Next year I think I will just put up 2 hummingbird feeders--both half "modified" so as to accomodate all. Unless i am feeling sorry for the Downy Woodpecker, that is.--
And I was wondering--is there anything I can do to "discourage" all the sparrows from monopolizing the finch feeder?? Nary a finch gets a chance to eat--not to even mention the Male Blue Grosbeak-although I suspect there is a female or 2 of the B.Grosbeaks that are not so easily intimadated, and are having no problem eating when the sparrows are. (I am saying I THINK I am recognizing a female blue grosbeak at the finch feeders as well when the sparrows are there.)
