I just got this for my 3 year olds birthday party. Once it's got 200 lbs of sand in it, it's not going anywhere. So I'm looking for a good full-shade groundcover that doesn't mind a little foot traffic now and then. I'm sure any/all grass under this thing is going to die. What do you suggest?

Does it do full shade? Dave's Garden recommends full sun to part shade. I love it though. Looks beautiful.

If you don't mind spreaders, vinca or labrador violets. I have had no luck with Irish Moss.
next time, we're not buying in a forest

vinca would be good as it will grow in sun or shade. it doesn't spread out as quickly in shady conditions as it will in full sun. i think it would get enough sunlight over the course of the day to do very well under that sand box.
that's a really cool box, too!! your daughter is going to love it!!

Sarah: Go to www.STEPABLES.com and take a look. I think you might try the Stepables "Scotch Moss". It takes heavy foot traffic. It grows fast, height is 3 inches and it says you can plant the various plants 12 " apart---they do spread but not so much the first year--but mine from last year is thick & pretty-(& is on the west side of my house, so sun does not bother it.) The label says it can go from part shade with am sun only to part sun & pm sun is ok--it may at least bear looking into.

^I was going to say to check out stepables. I bought a ton of groundcovers that can tolerate being stepped on a few times a day. I got some labrador violets, creeping wire vine, (I think those will look really neat once they've filled in around my granite rocks that are nearby), and a type of clover plant. For groundcovers, I have been choosing things that can be stepped on, because I'm the most klutzy person on the planet! I can't weed without trampling my flower beds!
