Making the rounds this morning looking for early nesters I found two in my yard. One was in an empty Satellite TV Cable spool, I hung up as a nest box. The other was in my next door neighbor's nest box that she has me clean and monitor all year. I Don't know what type of birds they are, yet, but I suspect they are good ones, NOT House Sparrows. Possibly, Carolina Wren, Carolina Chickadee, Tufted Titmouse, or even possibly Eastern bluebird in my Neighbor's box. All of these birds nest in a box or cavity, ONLY!

EARTH FIRST! (we'll strip-mine the OTHER planets later.)
Here is the nest in the cable spool house. This probably a Wren, Chickadee, or Titmouse nest. Hopefully I'll find out.
CABLE-SPOOL NESTBOX
Here is the nest in the standard Nestbox. I am fairly certain, now, that it IS a House Sparrow nest, due to the amount of trash and feathers used to make it. This is VERY typical of House Sparrow nests.

Surprisingly, there has NEVER been a COMPREHENSIVE study done of the nests of each bird species, to my knowledge. I feel that such a study would be INVALUABLE to our understanding of birds and have started making that a priority for me each spring. Please feel free to post your pictures of bird nests here and if possible get the species that made it.

Ah Thorny today I get to be the teacher Titmouse nest:Bottom of cavity lined with bark strips, dead deciduous leaves, moss, grass; nest cupped, padded with hair, fur, bits of string, cloth. Carolina chickadee: Bottom of cavity thickly lined by female with moss, animal hair, rabbit fur, feathers, and down of milkweed, thistle & cinnamon fern. Do you see {either} nuthatch there?? White breasted Nuthatch:Cavity lined with bark shreds, twigs, grasses, rootlets fur & hair. red breasted:bark shreds, grass, moss, feathers. tken from Petersons field guides: Eastern Birds Nests, Hal H. Harrison isbn0-395-93609-8 Its a GREAT refrence.
We have the White-Breasted Nuthatch all year and every few years we have a Winter invasion of the Red-Breasted Nuthatch here. I have seen and heard BOTH species here.
