Well, a little research and a trip to the only water garden store within 50 miles of here as yielded some results. Our stones are leaking lime into the water, which is a mild fertilizer. This encourages algae growth. And that is why there is suddenly so much of it. I bought this filter that they use for their gardens, supposed to only need replacing every 3-5 years for their significantly larger gardens. It's basically just a box you set the pump in with lots of filter-stuff around and ontop of the pump.
Not only did I get a filter but I got a trapdoor snail, 2 hornworts, and a free tadpole. The girls just love the tadpole. I think he's pretty neat too.
I hope that this solves the problem. I would really like to be able to see more than 4 inches into the water.
The filter solved the problem. Woohoo! I'm quite excited to see the bottom of the 3 foot section again. I'm a little disappointed that I can see the filter but I guess I'm just being finicky. You have to stand at a certain place in order to see it.
