Spotted this guy (I think he's adorable) on a small Nicotiana I planted. I have no clue how to start on bug IDs. Mostly, I need to know if he is good, bad, or neutral.

Thanks in advance.

Looks like you're right. Luckily I didn't find that out the hard way, lol.

Looks like a stinkbug to me as well...or maybe just a spittle bug, looks like its ready to lay its eggs...if you seen a small bit of foam (like spit) its probably a spittle bug...better safe than sorry!

When weeding, the best way to make sure you are removing a weed and not a valuable plant is to pull on it. If it comes out of the ground easily, it is a valuable plant. Mary Ann LaPensee

Papito, I grew up calling the outdoor black beetles we have outdoors here, stinkbugs.
Do you know the one I mean?
They like dirt and stick up their rears if touched.
What are they?

DeborahL, Those stink bugs I also grew up with and still do. We also call them stink bugs because they will also give off an awful odor if very perturbed. A skunky/garlicy smell. They are actually a type of dung beetle.

"Stink bugs have a reputation for being "smelly." Although it is true that stink bugs release an odor when disturbed or when crushed, many other insects have this same characteristic, including most other true bugs, ants, and many beetles (e.g. ladybugs)."

Oh, I had never heard that there are other bugs called stinkbugs.
