Well, not really This beauty has come up in a flower bed, and I didnt plant it! This female flower measures about 2" at the base (ovary?) and the bloom was huge. I tried to hand pollinate with a nearby male flower. The shape makes me think of a butternut, which I definitely would have put in the compost this year or last year....made soup a few times. What'dya think?

cant id it but i did something similar last year. put some cantalope innards in the heap and later put that compost on my flower beds. towards the end of the summer had a cantalope vine growing there. (note to self, always put the seeds in the trash)

I don't know the name of it, but it looks to me like it's one of those squash that people dry out and make bird houses out of. I had a vine of those one year and they got HUGE. Though I didn't know how to dry them, they rotted.

Thanks everyone! And Hi! I havent been on here in a while. Im thinking it's going to be some kind of huge something or other, a gourd Im guessing. Just because the little mini-fruit attached to the flower is so huge already! Well, let's hope it gets successfully polinated. I'll keep you all updated on this one for sure!

Could be a gourd, large butternut, hubbards are BIG squash. Kepp us updated with photos. PS to help kill seeds if you cold compost put a sheet of black plastic over the compost to heat it up so much the seeds 'cook; and are not fertile anymore.

Its defintely not a birdhouse/hardshell gourd (Lagenaria siceraria), as the flowers are white on those, and they open up and night as they are pollinated by moths. That looks to be a decorative gourd- probably spinning or dancing gourd which looks like this: The flowers of decorative gourds are yellowish orange like a pumpkin or a cuke, and they can cross pollinate with those types.

Im pretty sure they are butternut (and there are many!) More importantly, look how FAST these babies are growing!! First pic taken 7/2 and the second taken today, 7/7 just 5 days later. WOW!! Note my pink size 39 Birkenstocks for scale.

We'll just have to wait and see. The shape looks so much like a butternut squash. And I had them in the compost from making soup. Havent had gourds here in years, and even then, they were the little ones smaller than these babies.

Yes the skin is smooth. Faint green stripes running down the sides.
Dodge.....do you think it's something other than a butternut? Why? What are you thinking? Be specific.

:list: Yes..........
First off if it was a volunteer , came back, it would be crossed and not be true. 2nd off......Butternut squash in my Burgess book here is a pale orange color .
Most volunteers in anything, arent true when them come back. Not being rude.

Actually, when I say it was a volunteer, I meant it came from a seed in the compost, from a store bought squash I cooked with recently. Not from something I grew last year. What are the chances of a store bought squash being pure?

I think it depends on the variety of squash. If the farmer only grew a certain type of squash then it would be that one type. If he grew acorn and butternut and hubbard etc then they could have cross bred seeds in them.
