How often should we "hill" our potatoes. Ours are coming up real nice, I think my hubby's done it twice already.

I'm not sure if there is a ryme or reason to hilling potatoes, but I do know you want the potatoes covered at all times. So I would probably say each time after it rains to check them. Happy growing!

Someone told me it was to make sure the potatoes stay covered, that's why we have to hill them. I'm just not sure how often to do this.

i always thought that one "hilled" potatoes the first time to have adequate room for the plant to grow new potatoes. then afterward, the more you hilled them the more prolific your plant would be. (to explain what i mean) if you plant a seed potato. you hill it---then when the "green" comes thru the soil you hill it again to cover up the growth and there is more dirt area to grow more potatoes. I am thinking you could do this many times---because I have heard of this method: Plant a seed potato. when it grows thru the soil, center a tire over it. cover up the growth. when it comes thru the dirt--cover it up again and if/when necessary, add another tire. you can conitnue several times. then remove the tires in layers and harvest the potaotes. i have been intrigued with this method since I first heard of it several years ago, but have not tried it yet---has anyone?

I have to add soil to mine when I go home. I havent tried the tire method yet. I also heard of planting them in black plastic trash bags, drain hole in the bottom, roll the bag down, as they grow add soil and roll the bag up. Just dump the bag to harvest.

There is this at Territorial seed company. Kind of expensive given what it is made of. I would think anyone could make this out of recycled supplies. It does say to just keep adding soil and the more spuds you will get. I try to dump compost on mine when I can but I have harvested a lot without taking time to do it. Sometimes little green shoulders will pop up but you just cut that part off when cooking. Ideally I would like to start low and add a lot of soil to each plant. It is hard since mine are so close. The town I live in raises potatoes and I never see soil being added in the fields.
