We've seen pictures of all kinds of flowers here & all very beautiful....does anyone have new dahlias photos from this season to share??

I ordered this heirloom dahlia tuber from Old House Gardens. Jersey's Beauty is 5 feet tall and still growing.


Dahlia Hawaii tubers I bought at Costco. Not as big as Jersey's Beauty, but pretty.


Finally, my clearance $2 mini dahlia plant from a local garden center.

These aren't from this year... mine haven't bloomed yet.... but......

constantgardener, thoses are amazing. They make great pictures. I don't have much luck with dalias. I may have to try again.

So, they don't go to seed? You need a tuber?

I planted dahlia annuals last year and when I dug them out in the fall, they had tubers. I didn't know they could be replanted. I threw them out.

I think Dodge plants her dahlias from seeds and she'd mentioned she had better luck but I'm not sure what kind of dahlias she has. I've only planted with tubers because that's how I got into the dinnerplate dahlias last year, which I also have this year. The slugs love them as much as I do so it's a constant battle between The Slugs and Me.

Yes Tamara, you can replant the tubers the following year. You just need to dig them 2 weeks after the frost, let them dry, store them properly and divide them in the spring. I think each tuber just needs to have an eye for it to grow.

Diane, you may have had not so good luck because you're further south than me. I read that dahlias like full sun & cool weather. If you're area is very hot then you may need to mulch.

You have some gorgeous plants. Do you start them early inside.

The pink one is in the perrenial border the town put in.

The rest are in my (& the other stores next to me) sign post planter

Thanks Cinta, no I don't start them early inside because I didn't think I could handle all that work this year. Just tubers alone, I have 10 dinnerplate dahlia plants, 5 Jersey's Beauty, 6 Hawaii, 5 Christine & 2 AA size (Papageno & Zorro). It seems as long as all danger of frost has passed they will grow and thrive once the ground temp gets warm enough.

Wow, Wrennie...those are really pretty, especially the soft pink one.

I asked because you live in a cold zone like me. I usually put a little soil in a ziplock bag and put them in the bedroom windows. Maybe because I do not have a lot of sun on my property but if I do not start them early I do not get blooms until Sept.

That makes sense, Cinta. I guess the sun factor is really important with dahlias. Thats a really clever idea to use the ziplock bags. It makes for much easier transport outdoors. I have 2 dahlias that aren't suppose to bloom till Sept because they are the AA size but I think I'll do the ziplock bag thing next year to see if they bloom any earlier. Thanks for the info!!

Last year all of the blooms were like the first picture

I have Nooooo idea why the blooms vary in color this year???

Constantgardener I live in the Dallas area so I just leave my tubers in all year When it dies off as it gets cold in Dec and Jan I cut the stock about 1 and 1/2 inches above ground and mulch over deep with leaves.
In March they are growing back up again!

Diane I looooooooove that first pic, and the others but especially the first. Hmmm color change ? I dont know. Cool though.

Its 3 different tubers from the same mother plant? Or 3 stems off 1 tuber??? Maybe theyre reverting to the originals that were hybridized to get the mixed color at that particular size and petal shape/ density???

I have never dug up the original tuber I planted last year so I have no idea whats going on below the surface,, There is a main stock coming from the soil.. I had 3 blooms as last years blooms first..., then and Off the main stock are branches to the right and left On the upper left branch was the bloom with just a touch of cream in it and on the right was the bloom that is a very pale creamy lavender.. Soooo Bets me what's going on ...,

WHOA!!!!! Caribbean Fantasy is exquisite! That's weird and amazing that the one plant has such different looking blooms. It's beyond me but I absolutely adore it. You're so lucky you can grow it as a perennial where you live. Wish I could..

And I cannot believe they start back up as early as MARCH!?!? I'm so jealous!! I'm still shoveling snow here in March. I think I need to move outta MN to someplace warmer.

I want to share my Dahlia with all of your,,,,,,,Mine are doing great ,,I raised them from seeds.......

No tubers for me . Love these buggers.

Your plant looks very healthy and beautiful! I'd be happy to share seeds but how and when do I harvest them??? I've NEVER grown anything through seeds let alone harvest them.....

They arent read yet for seeds.....Come late in the fall , the dahliss will begin to turn dark brown and dry all over ....When you grab the top of them, it will all come apart in your hand and you will find all the seeds in then.

Remind me again inthe fall and I will post a photo of what mine look like when ready to harvest......Or send me a photo of yours and I will tell you ..

Wow! Nice looking Dahlias. Mine are just starting to form buds. I bought them last year and overwintered them indoors. I thought I had killed them but decided to plant them out when I restarted my garden and I think I may have divided them but can't remember that far back now, I think I started off with 2 last year, I now have 3. All I know is they are getting nice and bushy and can't wait for them to bloom.

I will remember to bug you as well Dodge when it comes time to harvest the seeds because I don't think I will be taking the tubers with me to Ontario and I couldn't figure it out last year. I never found the seed pod.

I hope I can Unclue you ladies on the seeds of dahlias.

They are too young to go to seed yet........I am going to read up on how to explain that theory...
Got me thinking also..

Why some go to seed quickly and some not till fall????????Good questions..

Yes you are going to have to unclueless me. But I do not think it will help I am the world worst seed grower on earth. Love your red dahlia!!!!

There was a first time for everyone.....I was so worried about picking seeds, I had 2 ladies try my seeds the following year, before I had the guts to trade.

You can pick the dead flowers off right now. This is only July.
COme september , ask me the question when to let the flowers turn to seed. I will do my best to guide you..

ok thought I'd share my pictures now. They are blooming, not too many flowers per plant, but I remember last year they were purple and I only bought one kind. Now I have a beautiful velvety red one and a purple one, well not so purple maybe more burgandy.





Now the flower has died on some and the pod is there. I guess now we have to wait for it to dry more, right dodge?

They look lovely and perfect .....I am only saving seeds from now on, on the dahlias.. Tubers take too long to get going.

Correct let it alone now .. The pod will turn dark brown and the seeds will be in the petals like.. About ---- this long.. pointed ends and flat.
Show me when they are dark brown.. YOur doing well.. I have white ones this year . Never before.. I am sure saving that one.

It's September. I'd like some seeds too please. I didn't know you could grow dahlias from seeds. I don't have any to share back with you but I'm sure you owe me some seeds for one reason or another. Maybe I can blackmail you about sitting around the forum pantsless.

I've been waiting, waiting, waiting all season. I look everyday at my dahlias trying to find anything that looks like seeds but NOTHING! They are still blooming like it's the middle of summer. I expected a frost in mid september but nothing severe enough yet! Sounds like everyone here is exchanging seeds already and I'm still only cutting blooms. I talked to the supplier I ordered my tubers from and they said that only the smaller dahlia varieties can be grown by seeds. They said the ones I have will never grow TRUE to name if I try doing seeds and that I'd get some ugly open centered flower if I tried. As for your seeds, thankyou but I don't think I can try the seed thing next season. I have around 30 new tubers on order for next season so I'll have no more garden space for even my old tubers. If you are still interested, I could try to send you some tubers in November but you'd have to divide them because I've never done it before & am afraid to screw it up. Actually, I'm willing to send one tuber clump of each variety to one person here (can't afford to send to multiple individuals) for free if they promise to love those dahlias and give them a safe and happy home.
