peppereater, I read what you said chuck roast is but yesterday at WalMart the roasts were labeled "shoulder" or "chuck".

Rump roast has the best taste for pot roast to me. Browned on both sides, in the slow cooker with diced potatoes, carrots, mushrooms, onions, few herbs, packet of brown gravy mix. Yummy!!!
I've never put turnips in but I'm gonna try it.

"When I make a roast, I get eye of round, whatever that is...and always fix it in the crock pot. " Cindy, I used to use eye of round but rump is tastier.

O.K., Norman...here is why I don't care how I cook filets...

[Linked Image]

I lost my mind (again) last week and bought over $800. worth of steaks. The boxes are full of t-bones, rib eyes and fillets...
This is just a small sampling of what's in 2 freezers...and now I don't have room for important stuff like my suet cakes.

Now you can see why I'm always divorced.

Bestofour...I think shoulder probably has the bone in...I mean, maybe the round part of the bone? Around here, you always see pork shoulder, less often beef...anyway, just goes to show how many different terms there are for stuff. They tell you to ask the butcher, but usually there's only some highschool kid in the meat dept., and he either stands there looking dumb, or calls in a manager, who calls in another manager, an you're there for 15 minutes. I once asked to have a whole pork loin cut into chops and packed 2 chops per pack, and the kid packed the tiny little tips in with a chop as two, and so on. Can't exactly feed two that way!

Best o 4...be careful with turnips...try maybe 1/2 cut in cubes at first...I love turnips, but they could overwhelm some things. Anyone use turnips in with greens? Yum!

I'm not sure I've ever had turnips. I'd like to try them. Do you just boil them and mash them like potatoes? I'm not eating greens :p

Besto...I'll bet that if you had greens that Vanessa cooked, you'd be hooked! Just guessing, but...she is from Arkansas!
Turnips don't suit many people...they're a little sharp. Have you had rutabagas? They're sweeter, but VERY similar. Don't let one experience with turnips decide you...I love 'em. Dice 'em small and cook 'til tender, add a little butter, some folks add a jot of milk, add salt and pepper... thumbup You could mash em JUST a bit to smooth the texture and blend with the butter.

Well...Norman was right...
I just WASTED 3 good filets.
It was no better than mediocre pot roast.

I ate them at Rachel's and they were GOOD! grinnnn
But, I didn't ask her how she made them...I just put 'em in the crock pot and dumped a can of beefy mushroom soup over 'em.

Christina...I get a little compulsive sometimes... lala
I thought buying all that at one time would keep me from having to go grocery shopping. That was stupid!
I still have to go buy milk, bread, washing powder, dish soap, vegetables, etc., etc., etc....
...everything except steak.

How dumb! confused

Bestofour ~ yes, when I am making a traditional pot roast, I put potatoes, onions, carrrots, turnips, rutabegas, celery and parsnips in with it.

In our family, turnips are a MUST special treat for Thanksgiving and Christmas dinner.

My mom always cut them in tiny little pieces and added the cooked bits to the potatoes just before mashing. The mashed potatoes were so snowy white and would have wee flecks of golden orange in it. THAT was the holiday delight.

To me, it ain't Christmas or Thanksgiving dinner unless there are tiny bits of turnips in my potatoes.

Is it too much starch to have potatoes, turnips, and rutabagas? Whad ya think?

No, I don't think so, Sheri. I have to calibrate all of my starch (carb) intake against my insulin pump. If I am allowed to have, for instance, 2 starch choices equalling 1 cup, it doesn't matter WHICH starchs fill that cup... so I can have a little of everything without worrying.

Other people might think of it as a "serving" and even so, the same thing would hold true. A big serving spoonful of the assorted choices would still be one serving.

Never thought of it that way Merme. But then again, I never just have 1 spoonful.

I'm not positive, but I think turnips, and even rutabegas, have less starch than potatoes.

Peppereater, I'm too lazy to look up the specifics this morning, but I tend to think you are right.

With my crazy (mandatory) diet, I must equate corn, bread, fruit, potatoes, pasta, rice, peas, and milk -- plus other things -- all in the same category.

It isn't the calorie content that is at issue, but the number of grams of carbs... every 15 grams counts as 1 carb choice. So roughly, a small apple or 1/2 of a banana and a piece of bread are about the same.

While I do not eat a low carb diet, I do have to adjust my insulin to manage the carbs and so it is a matter of mathematics for me, not dieting.

I never liked turnips at ALL!!! Then many years ago my MIL served a roast that she had put turnips in...I was not only HOOKED...but now I crave turnips! They are wonderful raw cut up in a salad...or by theirselves as a munchy snack.
If you ever have fresh turnips & greens...you will never be able to have canned greens again...just like night & day...the fresh are so wonderful. But, I feel the same about brussel sprouts...once you have fresh steamed brussel sprout...frozen ones are just not right!
I think a lot of it depends on specific cultures...turnips & greens are usually considered "soul food"...the major difference in soul food is sugar....sugar in beans, greens...just about everything. I am not one for the "sweet" taste in dishes...so I am not a fan of soul food.
Cindy Kay Ellen...I'm comin to your house for staeks! I'll even do the cookin! thumbup

Afgrey ~ My good friend Lori does something very easy with steaks that I have never tried but she swears by.

She puts a steak in a baking dish and pours on a can of mushroom soup plus a can of water and then just bakes the thing. She says it comes out yummy and as tender as can be. It's the only way her kids will eat steak.
