Thanks for your help, Heather about twice the width of the seed deep

Thanks Triss, and Angelblossom--they'll look great in no time for you.....I didn't even need to tie them onto the fence...they just worked their own way up it....It was a mess cleaning it off in the fall though.... :p

my beans are growing in full force now. as of today, i count nine breaking the surface. i'm a little concerned for the first one though, as it's still covered in a layer of dirt that isn't coming off even when i spray it with a water bottle. i'm worried that this might inhibit its growth somehow. mind you, i don't have any foundation for this worry, except that it doesn't seem to be happening to my other beans. here is a picture of one of my normal beans, typical of the lot: ![[Linked Image]](http://i7.photobucket.com/albums/y290/endofthewor1d/IMG_1273.jpg) here is a picture of the one i'm concerned about: ![[Linked Image]](http://i7.photobucket.com/albums/y290/endofthewor1d/IMG_1274.jpg) is that okay? should i brush it off with my fingers? i don't want to screw around with it too much for fear of killing it. those of you in the know, please let me in. thanks! endofthewor1d.

I'd leave it alone. If it starts pushing second leaves out that get caught in it then worry about it.

I agree I wouldn't worry yet, but I would mist it daily to help loosening the dirt on it.

Ok Triss I got it off. And then I decided to do the plop method of transplanting lol. I took it's egg carton and all and plopped it into a larger decorator pot. This is where I hope it will stay through out the summer. I intend to try and keep it indoors. And make it frame my east facing kitchen window. I have venetion blinds and I just don't care for them. So I'm hoping the vine will cover them up for the most part.

Hmmm, that's a good question Triss....they're pretty big roots...I'd try to cut the bottom out of the egg carton Tammy. ![thumbup thumbup](/old/images/graemlins/default/thumb.gif)

I hope it works for you Tammy.. growing it indoors. I've got to dig up the ground on the sides of the arbor and I'm going to start my other PHB outside in the ground, I hope it works out alright.

i just bought some - there's a hardware store by my work and they always have some nursery come in each year that sets up outside the store... these were mentioned in other posts and when i saw them, i grabbed them. i planted them the other day...and we got a ton of rain since...they're still there - been eaten up a bit tho. i DO see new growth ![smile smile](/old/images/graemlins/default/smile.gif) do these need any fertilizer? if so, how often. what colors do they come in and how do you harvest the seeds? and how long will the seeds be good for??

Very pretty picture, owlette! joclyn ~ I've never fertilized mine, and they do very well. You harvest the seeds after the purple pods turn brown and dry - it you take the seeds before they will not be ready. My seeds seem to be good for at least a couple of years now. They come in white also, but I've never seen seeds for them for sale around here.
