Ooooh! You got a male Red-Bellied Woodpecker! I have a female Red-Bellied that visits my feeders occasionally.

I wish we had Cardinals! I'm so jealous! The woodpecker looks like it may be related to Flickers... anyone know if it is?

Great pictures of some very pretty birds! We have all of those on our feeders here too. The red-bellied has been here for many years now, and last winter I saw a juvenile one too - he was much smaller than the regular visitor.
Julie - we also have a Northern Flicker woodpecker too, who mostly eats bugs and worms from the grass. I don't know if they are related - a search didnt' bring up anything...

Flickers ARE Woodpeckers. Well, Actually, Flickers eat ants, so spend more time feeding on the ground, so Flickers are more like, "Ground"peckers. Flickers are related to the other species of Woodpeckers found worldwide. Woodpeckers are one of MY mainn specialties when it comes to birdwatching. Many birders put Woodpeckers at or near the top of their list of favorite birds. Everybody loves Woodpeckers!!

yes, Thorny - I knew that Flickers ARE woodpeckers - just didn't know if they were of the same type as red-bellied.
To date, we have 5 types of woodpeckers here in our yard -
Downy Hairy Red-bellied Northern Flicker Pileated
I'm thrilled to have them all!

northern flicker = colaptes auratus red bellied woodpecker = melanerpes carolinus both are from the Order PICIFORMES - Family PICIDAE Flicker is more closely related to the Gilded flicker red bellied is closer to the golden fronted and gila woodpeckers. Although a silhouette of any of these 5 would look extremely similar.

heres a couple still working on this photo thingy. resized the downy too small. have some other pics of it but shooting at 300 requires a steady hand and i dont seem to have em. gonna have to use a tripod with that length and that kinda cuts out spontaneous shots! having a little fun with the new camera and lense. dont think ill ever be good enough freehand with the long lense though.
