There might be a few additions yet if others arrive before the end of the month when I'll be starting my seeds! this may sound like a lot, but it's down significantly from last years 256 tomato plants in my gardens. (I had started over 600, but gave many away to friends and neighbors). I hope all have a great gardening season this year! As last year wasn't one of the best here!

I've noticed Amazon Chocolate and JD's Special C-Tex seem to be the Green Giant and Lime Green Salad of 2009. Gotta, haveta, needta have it..

To help justify growing what others may deem excessive amounts of any veggie I donate the extras to the senior center and the food pantry. They usually take all they can lay hands on.

I've got some Roma seedlings in containers.I didn't have money,so I used garden soil. They are growing quickly and I haven't lost any yet. The containes are outside and they get good sunlight.

Have you ever grown Big Zac F1? Those are notoriously big agro fair type tomatoes.

I started some micro-dwarfs a while back. They've got small true leaves now:

Florida Petite
Tigerette Cherry Gold
Red Robin

I've also got 2 Whippersnappers about 3" tall now.

How can I stop squirrels from eating my tomatoes growing in my garden? annette

When you see the squirrels, spray them with water.Or cover the tomatoes.

I'd opt for the second option. You're not always going to see what squirrels are up to out there.

Tom's Yellow Wonder If it's from Tom, it MIGHT be yellow, he seems to have trouble with the seed growing true to the one mutation...
I'll let you know if mine produces a yellow, or not,...

I got to planting some Roma plants in the garden today. They can stand up to the weather because they've been hardened off already.I also planted some tomatillo plants as well.

We plan on trying different heirlooms-
so far we've started:

We planted plants we bought at lowe's or wallyworld last year and we had one crop then blah- nothing. The plants were just not that good. So this year we are planting heirlooms. I know they have their problems but we've raised them in the past with good success. And I can't beat their taste.-------G

But I am growing for a farmers market this year and I hope to have the best selection of tomato's there .......that and I use type specific tomato's in certain recipes ...being a chef I am picky about the outcome ...

Ohhh and I am desperatly seeking a lost hierloom tomato from here in west virginia it is called ....Akers West Virginia .....seems alot of people used to have this seed but it has faded out ....I would love to find some .....

I love heirloom tomatoes & have German Pink, Jerry's German Giant, Orange banana, Opalka/olpaka (I've seen it both ways, don't know which is proper) Kellog's breakfast, and a family heirloom that is huge, red on the outside, yellow & red on the inside. ?? pineapple or Mr. Stripey?

Did you plant the Brandywine's this year? I'm trying them for the first time. I've heard they don't like really hot weather and we certainly get that where I am but I plan to try something that I hope will see them through. Are you in a 'hot zone'?

I planted some and they're doing great. If temps get near 100, I'll provide shade.

After some crazy insanely cold weather, I'm finally hardening my tomato plants off! They spent several hours in the shade next to the house out of the full brunt of the silly wind. From now on until they get planted in pots or in the ground, they'll go into the garage if temps go below 13C or if it threatens to rain.

On Monday, I got 48 indeterminate tomatoes planted, 6 determinates in containers, 3 more in-ground indeterminates, and 3 in-ground dwarfs. I'm all done except for 4 more indeterminates that go in a bed that's not quite prepared yet.

What a relief to get all those plants in!! Now we've got rain until tomorrow so they can all grow roots and new growth up top. And then sunshine!

I sowed some determinate Whippersnappers back in February for some early cherries and we had this salad on Saturday with them:



Also in that garden salad are violets (edible), lemon balm, green onions, and Greek oregano.

Great looking pictures. Not fair adding the one with fresh tomatoes. I'm about finished planting my plants. Have a few to plant this weekend. I think I have about 70 out and about ten more to go. Haven't counted total varieties yet. Somewhere between 50-60 I imagine. The early ones are looking good and blooming. So hope to see some little maters soon. Jay

My roma and rutgers tomato plants are blooming. I ca count many tomatoes growing. How can I keep them blooming longer?
