 Thorny, I heard the most interesting bird call the other day and I'm hoping you'll be able to identify it. It sounded just like a rusted swing or metal sign swinging slowly in a breeze! What kind of bird would likely make such a call? By the way, I was in the great Scarborough salt water marsh and there wasn't anything metallic for miles away to make the sound artificially. Merme

Sounds like a Blue Jay. They make a huge number of strange calls, including a PERFECT Red-Tail Hawk screech, a, "TOO-LOO" call,and very famously, a rusty barn-gate hinge squeak or squeal. Blue Jays are members of the Crow family, but like Mockingbirds, can imitate a large number of sounds they hear.

Oh, a blue jay! I never would have guessed that! But I'm telling you it was very eerie! squeeeeeeeek, squeeeeeeeeeek! Squeeeeeeeek, squeeeeeeeeek! Really slow and rhythmic! spooky to hear in the middle of no where!!
