Boy, these seeds are keeping us busy.

dodge, I don't think my planting more right now would do any good.

So are the ones I have blooming the black oil seeds rather than the mammoth? Can you tell by the heads.

Yes you can tell, At least I thinjk so this way:
The black oil are shorter--say 4-5 ft tall (well mine are)
and they have lots of smaller flower heads coming out quicker than the mammoth.
The mammoth are from 5-7 ft tall (at least) & so far on mine--you can see where heads are making but only 1 is actually flowering as of yet.

I will go back in the first Thread & re-wriote when we planted so we can refer to it.

I will take new photos of mine tomorrow..I figure I will do so every once a week. he first flowering head of my Black oil sunflowers is bigger--I measured it back in the day I will measure it again tomorrow, to see how it grew.

Sheri0--when did you plant yours??

I know I planted my seeds (both types) on April 20, 2010.

I also know you had several weeks start on me---
but
I could not find the date--do you have it written down someplace???

I posted on here somewhere when I planted but I didn't write it down.

I don't know what I'm talking about then because I have stalks that are probably 10-12 feet tall but the flower heads aren't gigantic like I think they should be. I'll take a picture today.

I found one in my garden. It is about 3-4 foot tall and forming a flower head. Probably a lost treasure from a bird, so black oil. I don't feed the birds so they brought it from a neighbor.

Sheri--I noticed that my Black oil flower heads are growing largernow once they have opened. and my 1 mammoth flower head is getting larger as well. I am thinking that is how they grow. ???
and now that I think of it---
I only have 1 mammoth flower head as of yet, and it is getting larger. the others show promise but have not shown any flowers yet. But in the mean time they get taller & taller...I am thinking this is how it works with that too?

I say we have patience & see just see waht occurs???

I read that once the heads start drooping to stop watering because they are setting seeds. Do you think I should water anyway?

Black Oil are 3 - 5 feet tall with MULTIPLE 4 - 6 inch blooms all over them. Mammoth can grow to 20 feet tall with a SINGLE bloom, 1 - 1 1/2 feet in diameter. Birds like to eat EITHER type and EITHER type make good snacks for people, too. (I keep the 50 pound bag of BOSS on my front porch next to my "birding" chair and munch on the seeds as I photograph the birds eating the SAME seeds out of my feeders).

WOW Carol - good for you!!! How do you keep them standing tall with all the rain you've been getting?

My 2 small sunflower heads have disappeared completely thanks to some animal. There were only the 2 stems with nothing on top now, so I pulled them out. Can't win for trying...

Thank you all. bow

Thorny: one of my mammoth plants has a flower already and 1/2 of it has been eaten out even before maturity.--if you look back in this thread you will see my black oil sunflower photos. They have a LOT of blooms. grin

I have no secret as to how I keep them standing tall.--I planted them a bit deeper than was suggested but other than that nothing different at all. So basically I am just lucky. why

sorry about the animal. Don't you wish we could just put up a "keep out" sign on our stuff??? (& have it work???)

Something, (has to be a bird), has been eating some of the Mammoth seeds before they are even mature.

The stems on sunflowers are very very strong. Wait till you start to harvest them.
I almost had to chop them with an ax.

Yep the birds do harvest them heads quickly. Now you know why I got mine off an took photos sooner , last year.

about the stems--yes I know Barb.
Rod & I decided a few weeks ago that he would cut them off at the ground this fall & then next spring we hope they would be rotted enough for me to pull the roots out. why
and I understnad that the birds will "harvest" the seeds quickly--but I was hoping they would at least wait unil they were matured. But oh well--I guess if they are hungry well then they are hungry.

Carol, your flowers look great. I had one that grew crooked. I tried to stake it up but because the stalk is so thick and strong it grew where it wanted. I'm not sure why it went crooked but who knows why anyone or anything takes up the life of a crook.

That is ok, as a matter of fact that is great !!!--
I think mine were like 4 feet tall when you planted yours.
and Sheri's were like 2 feet tall when I planted mine----so it is all good---
besides it is your zones (& your rains) fault not yours.

Thanks barb.

I s lived out in the country for 25 years--so that should count for something right???

I stopped growing onions because I couild not get out to m y raised b ad until it was too warm. I guess next year i'll just put on some boots & plant them anyway huh???

DH keeps saying he is going to buy me a few loads of dirt & raise the back yard where my garden is--then I could have a larger garden. THAT would be grand.
I could have a lot of potatoes, and onions, tomatoes & even more sunflowers---yea---I may have to keep on him about that----
If he does that thought I will have to replant my asperagus bed and once again move my herbs egad
but oh well...

but it is easier on him if I buy them than if h e has to help me grow them---

But the good news is, I have until next year to get him to agree to hauling in more soil for me back there.

Lots of folks look down on gardening.
My neighbors ask me, why do you do all that work.
Told them I was raised like that. And love it.

yea I know---but I like to garden too. my grandfather had most of his yard i n grden (but then he had 12 kids to feed). Then my dad had a very large garden at our house. Mom would can a lot. she still does some but not like when hwe were home.

I had a nice sized garden at the farm. I planted enough potatoes to get us thru until january most years.
The only thing I put up in jars was jelly. otherwise I froze what others would can. As an example I would take a 15 oz can of tomatoes wash out the can & squish it full of tomatoes so I would have a premeasured amount in each container & put up my things that way. I had a seal a-meal & would put up my corn with that.
yep I like a garden. It is good for the soul & good for the body.

You should of waited till retirement to sell the farm.
An move to town. I been on the farm allmy life. Only 9 months in town when we married, then we found a farm quick to get back on.

My brother sold the homestead farm, an regrets it terribly today.
His wife wanted to be by her mommy.......

Oh well.

I know I have said before. But my DH thought he was not a well man & he did not want me to be left all alone on the farm and he had a job where he worked 60 hours a week, mandatory. So we sold it.---and thankfully we found out that he was not sick after all--and then the place he was at closed down & moved down south.

But I guess things happen for a reason....just wish I knew what that reason was.... why

Gardening is a lot of work but I love it. I don't know why I have to plant stuff but I do.

Juniegirl, you just have to make the best of where you live. Bloom where you're planted. flwr

no dont feel guilty Dodge--be happy for the both of us.

The girls were shocked when he sold the farm.---they said we had talked about it for so long (2 years) that they figured that is all we would ever do--just talk about it.

The oldest is dating a guy that intends to move back to his family farm one day--so she may well become a farmer's wife.
The little one is likley to end up on one of those 2 acre homes out on the edge of town. her DH wants to build one day.

I know Illinois is a lovely flatter farm country than Pennsylvania. We went thru it probably 16 or 18 times. When we were going out west , back an forth.
Illinois , Ohio, Iowa were very good farm countrys. Hd had a mad passion for Iowa.

I said great to visit but not to live. I happen to like our Forests an hills here.
Makes for pretty scenery too.

I have only been thru pennsylvania a few times & never really stopped.
I do love nice scenery though. perhaps some day.

I guess we all just as well be happy where we are---it will work out best for us that way. But yes I am sure that Penna is very much more Scenic that the flat lands around here.

well good night snooz

North Carolina is a good place. Flat and hills, beach and dry land, mountains with skiing and snow at my house every once in a while.

I've never been to PA or IL. Maybe I can visit you guys.

There is a lot of farming. In my county there is a lot of poultry raising. Any in SC, which is 16 miles the other way from me they grow a lot of watermelons. They have a watermelon festival and everything.

ah!! so tell me Dodge---There are 2 reasons that come to mind for planting that many sunflowerss.

1) to commercially sell them. why

2) to entice the Doves to come and land to eat them. why

I must admit--such a nice lot of sunflowers....

I will top that if I can get to Marshville and get a picture. My friend's family plants and harvests and sells the seeds. They have, I don't know how many acres on 2 sides of a road and it's beautiful. I posted a picture on here several years ago. One thing that amazes me about the fields is that there are no weeds in the fields. No grass, nothing but dirt and the plants. It's gorgeous.

Hey mean dodge. How long do your sunflower stalks look pretty and healthy. Mine are starting to wilt up a bit and I thought they were through but yesterday a few more flowers sprouted out. The foliage looks pitiful though.

Barb: We think the guy who built our house took the top layer of soil here in the back of the house either used it in his own yard or sold it. The yards around us are higher than ours is by a LOT & When my DH mentioned it to the neighbor, his exact exact words were, "yea, I don't know what he did with that dirt"
See their wives are related so he likley knows just what happened.

As a result we have a mini-swamp in our back yard when it rains, & since we got 2+ inches last night, it is really bad out back. That is why I have a raised garden.

When I can I think I will cut down the tallest one & measure it that way. The heads are all drooping now anyway.

Omg..dirt all right..more like gold to a lawn.

That is not nice of the contractors.

We know what you mean. They wan it for their own to sell or use in their yard.
Top soil is the mostest . Valuable.

Poor you .

yep I know--& me here coming from a yard & garden that was out of this world when it came to quality of soil. I even made DH help me bring in soil from my old yard to this house in teh back bewteen the rocked area & teh house when I dug out the clay. 25---5 gallon buckets full to be exact. I slept better after that, for sure.

He keeps sayoing he is going ot buy me a few loads of soil for the very back area so I can have a larger garden & it will not have to be raised. But I've yet to see that happen yet.

Tamara & Dodge: Thanks to both of you

Remember, when the heads are drooping they're making seeds so be sure the seeds are made before you go to chopping.

I just cut down my Black Oil Sunflowers. They had all died.--The Birds had gotten most of the seeds already anyway. The few that were left were just hollow shells. They apparently never made completely---but hey I did harvest 1 head a few weeks back that was good. So they were not a total loss.

I have tried to plant pumpkins and watermelons & canteloupes in years past.
I seem to have a lot of problems

I should have planted pumpkins between the sunflowers huh????-

I just took down all but 3 o f my mammoth sunflowers.
The longest one was 10 ft to the bottom of the seed head.

So unless one of my 3 standing yet are taller or barb has a taller one, Sheri is in the lead with 10 ft 11 inches.

I will not measure the 3 left until DH cuts them down. The stalks are too thick for me to manage with my pruner. As it was, I had to leave the one I did manage to bring down in the garden because the root ball was taking about a gallon of dirt with it--and I would not like that happening.

off to take a shower now---it is only 75 out but I am wringing wet.

Did great. See how much the birds polished off already.

Barb--that is fantastic--my B O heads were not that large.
at very first I picked 2 heads & only got like 2 cups o f seeds..I left the others on to dry & I guess I made a mistake--it rained too much at the wrong time & they all withered up & dryed out. but at least I did get some.

I have not measured my mammoth seeds yet--but I may have gotten a gallon-
all of my plants are cut down, Rod is slowly pulling out the trunks that we left behind---

I learned the hard way about that..I put a feeder in my perennial garden, I had more weeds and millet and such growing than the perennials lol

I cut off several heads and dried them and the birds loved them. I was out there yesterday and my stalks are totally gone. I guess withered by the heat, wind and dry weather. It's so weird. I'm going to plant more next year. The birds are so cute hanging upside down eating from them.

If you say they will grow it sounds good to me--
we can see how the same seed grows when planted in 3 different regions of the USA.

Sounds like a fun plan !!! applaud
