Think im growing a bean stalk......



Actually it's a sunflower that seeded it self from last yrs stalk. This thing is got to be 8ft high , the trellis top is at the top op my head and im 5'8.

No head yet ...wonder how high it will get? I had to strip some leaves off on the cuke side cause they were climbing up into it.



Bet yr bottom i'll be saving the seeds before the birds get them all :wink:.

Those leaves would make some beautiful stepping stones if you had a form and some cement

Is that a tree on the other side? And if so are you worried about the roots doing damage to your foundation as it matures?

I was looking today too, there's 2 spots in the yard that im wearing the grass out on my path to the garden....hmmmm those would be perfect.

Yes it is elm something . I was going to dig it up last yr and transplant it but it's right by some old tele box , so I was going to call them to rid it.

Not worried about the foundation , it's on piers. Just have to watch it on the house, I try to keep the limbs off it and trim it back ..kinda hate to get rid of it now that it's nice size.

Elm is a hard wood isn't it? One of those where the branches brake off and cause problems? You can so tell I'm from the evergreen state.

Owning a home in the country is interesting. I'm surrounded by hardwood and am always making sure that nothing is within falling distance of the house if I can so the wind storms don't cause a bunch of damage to the house.

Does it show that I'm paranoid?

maybe a little paranoid. But its a hard call trees near the house can have a great cooling effect in the summer and can break a cold winter wind to reduce heating costs. But where to draw the line between too close.... Each to their own I suppose.

Looking at that picture it is right up against the house as a sapling. Considering how wide they get I'd say he's going to have major problems over time. Roots in the plumbing, Branches on the roof along with the yearly leaf thing. I'd suggest moving it while it is still small. That way you don't have to worry about it. You can still plant it close enough to the house to provide shade.

I will be trimming it back off the house , it sits about a ft off the house.
I can reach the top from the roof to trim it ...just haven't done it yet.

As for over time ...I'll let the proper people know about it and I'll keep trimming it off the house . If they don't take care of it with in 2 yrs ...then I don't care. In 2 yrs we will be out of here ...just waiting for the boy to graduate.

If it gets to bad I'll just wack it

... going to the depot to get some cement to try Tamara's idea :wink:

AS you can see the wear spots I have a ? for trying Tamara's idea.
Should I make a pad and imprint the leave or make the pad the shape of the leaf ?
The stem part is what im worried about it breaking if it's just the leaf shape ...then I would have hearts when the stem breaks off. hmmmm

Rick: I would think if you put it in green then if it did indeed break it owul dnot go so until it had dried out which would be well after the stone had set.

Below are some directions on how to make a stepping stone. I thought you had to lubricate the item to be copied, and I was correct.
I wonder if cooking spray or vaseline would work as well.

Thanks Tamara, hope to try it soon . I have a spot to fix in the sidewalk and then I'll try it with the leftover cement.


So... here we are ...it's made it to the roof and the head is just starting .
Im going to need to get on the roof to cut the head when it's ready.

I would have to say this one is the tallest I've had over the yrs.
Had a few that were big but not super tall. One last year was about 8ft high and had filled out like a tree that had a ton of heads on it.

They really like this spot ...must be the heat , and they get alot of water there too.

Wow that is an impressive sumflower stalk. I do hope the flower will match it. That would be cool.

Since it's so..tall Im afriard it's going to topple over so I gave it a stake.

Not just a little one ... had one of those when it was 5ft high. This stake is 10ft high .
Had to get the ladder out to tie it up :wink: .




Stalk is about 1 1/2" in dia
