Just wondering if anyone has some 'Fall projects' under way? Moving things around..adding in new items? Just being nosy lol

I am keeping an eye out for some bright colored mums..I have none and think it's time I added a plant or two..blame TK grin She gave me the idea with her post on planting some.

I also have two shrubs to move..they grew too large this year..you'd think when a tag says 3 by 4 it shouldn't grow to 6 by 8 haha

I also need to re-do the crushed rock perimeter around my house..ugh, that's a big job.

I'll have all the gardens to prep at my new house a few of the projects are:

1: in late fall Tarp the area of weeds I want to put vegetables in Thus reducing the weeds that come up in spring.

2: Figure out how many plant are on the propery that I want to keep. I know theres hosta, mint, monarda, black eyed susans, iris and a single black violet.

3: transplant these all to a safe place while i destroy all the weeds around them and ad some more soil to the gardens.

When I'm done with the garden this fall I don't think much will remain it its previous place.

Sounds like a lot of fun ahead Shani thumbup

You know taking some pics of your gardens now..will help you remember where things are in spring also. If your area is like mine, it takes awhile for things to poke out of the ground. That way..you have an idea where to dig out and replant.

Fall for me is different and lasts well into winter. Then winter blends with spring. So other than a lot of clean up of fall litter which I have already begun, I plant a lot of my seeds then. And plant bulbs as soon as I can get my hands on them. Fall and winter are my busiest garden seasons.

Tamara--if you are needing to work that much--come on over here (I'm closer after all) & mow our lawn. There is what looks like a thick bladed grass that honestly grows like 1-2 inches a day---
Example:
Rod cut teh grass on saturday afternoon & it needed cut again by Sunday evening.
(he cut it MOnday night)
The neighbor pulled up a plant of it & took it to a friend of his who is an agronomist(???) apparently we all have a weed (Rod could not remember the name) taking over our lawns.--
So see---you could cut our lawn about every 3 days easy. (its a few feet shy of 1/2 acre) grin why

Give the acid loving plants their fall treatment of hollytone.
Rake leaves.
Harvest the celosia seeds.
Clean up the dead leaves from the glads and irises.
Keep turning the compost.
Clear the path to the future root cellar.
Work on the future veggie patch.
Clean the gutters after the leaves finish falling.
Just to mention a few lol.

I cleaned my gutters on the house last week or so. I will be doing it again. I cleaned the gutters on the gazebo this week. I will be doing it again. My plan is to keep as much dry tinder away from my structures as possible. And water, water, water.....

I have no trees around my structures either Tina..for fear of them falling with the storms we get.

Hoping you get some wet weather soon.

I am surrounded snug up to the house with shrubbery and trees, Tamara. It is the only way to protect my house from the really heavy winds. 100 mph plus at times. They also help keep my house cooler in the summer and warmer in the winter. But I need to keep them watered and trimmed and healthy or they can become part of the problem instead of a solution. And the litter they drop needs to be kept cleaned up.
I am not expecting rain until maybe Nov. but more likely in Dec or after. I live in desert and that is to be expected. One year, 2001/2 I think, we had a rain total for the year a little over 4 inches. That was the lowest ever recorded. I lost a lot of plants then. Our weather year is counted from July 1 through the following June 30 for some reason. Our big winds are usually late summer through early winter and the humidity drops to single digits. That is when you most see California wildfires on the news.

When it gets cool enough someone will clean the outside of the windows. We had someone do the inside this week but it was just too hot to do the outside.

Tamara, please come here to rake. We have a lot of oak trees and get covered with leaves.

I need to move some hosta that isn't in the shade since the road people cut down the trees. They're a little burnt at this point.

I'm going to plant winter rye as a cover crop in the vege gardens.

People will be raking here a little earlier than usual..we had frost every month this year, hasn't happened since before I was born my grandmother said..but you can tell the lawns are crispy and the trees have a yellow tinge.

I always loved to rake leaves, even as a child. We had an elderly neighbor who used to keep a smaller rake for me to use when he was outside lol I used to ask if I could help, he laughed and told me he'd leave the rake outside and I could rake as I pleased.

The apples are falling...

Our leaves have begun to drop. The heat and the wind combo today gave them a huge jump start.

Wow your leaves are already dropping? Ours are just starting to change colour.
I would have thought ours would have gone first as I am located a wee bit further north.

haha no, see Barb, I have no nice big trees to speak of.
Also right now most all leaves are green & summerish yet, so when I saw a few brown leaves in 1 place I noticed them.
& so for fun I counted them--Then this conversation began--It was just good timing is all.

I have so much to do..it's scary. Still have a few loads of lime to hand spread on fields this week...we can't find, rent or borrow a spreader anywhere and the lime is sitting in the field..not what I wanted to hear.

I have a few weeks of full days ahead of me...

Ouch, Tamara.
It has been too hot to keep up my usual speed, not that I'm speedy. But I've worked a little the last couple of mornings. So there are a few less leaves and a little less wildfire danger near me.

Big stuff burn. Some I stack.

Wen the weather is suitable mostly in the spring, I let them dry , rake a burn right in the garden. Good potash for the ground.

I have started a few of my fall jobs, but the more I look around the school the more I see to do so I'm hoping to arrange a work weekend and get a bunch of friends over in a few weeks and knock down big chunks of the list then.

So far the fall project has been to dig out the foundation where we have a crack, & for Rod to seal it up.
Now all is left is for it to be dry enough so the backhoe guy can come & put all the dirt back in the "trench" before winter sets in.

Now if DH would only do as he has been talking about for 2 years now & have some good soil hauled in so I can have the back of the yard raised up a bit--

*then I could have a larger garden & also I would not need hip boots to get back to it.*

Hundreds of trees need trimming and the stuff needs to be hauled off the hill to be hauled to our green waste dump. This is what I have been working on mostly. In the cooler parts of my days. And water, water, water.
