Hi everyone!

My name is April and this is the first year that I have put in my own garden! In past years I have helped my mom put hers in but this year I have gone totally garden crazy!!!
To date I have spend over $400 on my garden...you might be thinking right now that I have a spectacular garden but think again...I do not. The first set of flowers that I planted had a tragic end because I ignored some sunlight basics so I was forced to redo most of it mid-july. So far I have a great assortment of flowers (asiatic lillies,pansies, impatients, petunia, hostas etc...you know the regular type!) and a vegatable garden where I am growing two type of tomatoes chives, red and green peppers, and a sparse bean plant.
I have also designed and built my own flower boxes.
Some problems I have had this summer are earwigs!!!To solve this problem I have mixed dishsoap into my watering can. This worked magnificantly. Also presently the petals on my asiatic lillies have fallen off aprox a month ago and are yet to be replenished.

Sorry for the long introduction. I am glad to have found such an informative site to refer to for my gardening questions!

Hi April! I have a plant that may also help with earwigs if you wana get rid of them organically. Its called a "Northern Pitcher plant" though when you buy it at the greenhouse, it says "Cobra plant." It has long tube like "pitchers" that attract ants, and all kindsa bugz that'll die in them and get eaten. currently, mine is full of earwigs, and i can't find any around the rest of my small outside area. I have to dump em out every once in a while >.<

WELCOME Nice to have you here. With your lilies...did they bloom? And if so, maybe the little guys are just "done" for the year and are going to sleep.

Hi! Sorry I haven't checked this section in a while.
Yes my lillies bloomed. I didn't know that they will only bloom once a year. Someone gave me this rather explicit description about how the flower impregnates itself after it has bloomed. Me being totally naive and gullable (this being my first garden) believed it and impatiently awaited for the baby lillies! LOL! I now know that the plant has gone to sleep for the rest of the summer. I have posted this question in the outdoor flowers section but does anyone know if it would be ok to kept the three lillies in the flower box and bring them inside for the winter then bring them back out in the spring? I was thinking of transplanting the flowers into the ground but I think I would rather keep them in the box seeing as I am renting the house I stay in and would rather keep perrenials in boxes so that I can take them with me when I move.
Also, thanks Phoebe for the suggestion on how to get rid of some of those pesky earwigs that keep popping up and eating my flowers! I will be sure to pick up a "Northern Pitcher plant" to keep those lil buggers away next year! Do you just have them in a pot beside your garden? I assume this is how you can dump them out when its full...
