My refrigerator is taking a dump and need to purchase a new one quickly. Haven't shopped for a frig in years. I need to get the measurements for the area and see if there is a hook up for water. Does anyone have a new frig they absolutely love? I have a small extra deep freeze...but I would like this frig to have a smaller freezer as well. I have a side by side now but don't like the amt. of food that it holds. Sorry I don't know the size of this one but it is big. I would rather have shelves that are wider and deep. Does anyone know of any advantages or disadvantages of having the freezer on the bottom? And would it be better to have a door type or a pull out? Automatic icemakers? never had one so don't know what is good or bad. I think I would like to go with Sears. here is a link to the Sears nearest me. Sears refrig Please help me narrow it down....I'm confused already. Help me somebody Pleeeeeeeeeeeeeease!

I just got a new side by side with water and ice through the door...I love it! Mine has a meat and cheese drawer, crisperdrawer, and fruit/veggie drawer that you can adjust the humidity on.
It is an extra deep and wide model, and I am amazed at how much it can hold...I purposely got the model with the smaller freezer, though 'cause we have a big freezer in the garage.
Make sure when you are looking to pay attention to where and how much space the Ice maker takes up!

Ohhh, also check to see where the filter for the water is located...some are under, some are behind...mine is in the fridge. much easier to change!

Hi Cat ~
Besides what Barley already said, I would also add that many people I know with freezers on the bottom really DISLIKE that arrangement once they get it home and actually use it. Something to do with all the bending....
You can shop with confidence at Sears, I have always thought. I visited the page you linked us to and there is certainly a nice selection available. Gee, having 25 cubic feet of food storage might be really nice.

Good info. Barley...never thought about the area the ice maker would take up.....oh...now I definitely want the filter inside. So does that narrow things down. 1218 to choose from.... Do I have to have a side by side to have the ice maker/filter?? What brand is yours? Anybody DON"T like a certain brand and why???

Hmmmm...bending right now is not a good thing for me. Thanks for the info. Merme....definitely taking that into consideration.
Okay got the measurements of the one taking a dump. 67" ht....could max at 70 in..(have a cupboard above) 31" deep...wouldn't want to go any further out. 35 3/4" wide....can only go 1" wider if I had to.
Since it is a side by side it is 21" across on the frig part and 14 1/2 across on the freezer.
So does that mean this frig is 21" side by side refrigerator????? It says Amana 25 free o frost! Now I am really confused.

Mine's a frigidaire... When we were shopping, I'm pretty sure I saw a few that were not side by side but still had water/ice...but not many... We finally went side by side because I have had the freezer on the bottom and HATED it...Everything got lost, you had to look on your hands and knees...no fun. I was also tired of the water pitcher in the fridge, taking up space, and apparently Mike is unable to refill an ice cube tray for the life of him. Rather than fight, I wanted the water/ice option...I will never go back to trays!!! It is really confusing...make sure you ask (or measure yourself) if the door hinges are counted in the overall measurements...on ours they were not, and we had to raise the cabinet above the fridge an inch (one lousy inch!) to get the fridge in place.

my only comment (since you already have lots of good advice) is that when you look at the ice/water dispensers, remember the pros & cons of a button vs a lever. ours is button, and it is great in as much as it is more durable, etc... but, if i am using a plastic or paper cup, i have to press it with my hand instead of the cup.
problem with levers is they will break sometimes (seen it happen)

Was just searching through sears...seems like anything around 30" deep is considered "counter depth" and is therefore more expensive. How weird!

I got a new refrigerator a few months ago. I only buy Kenmore stuff... I'm not sure which model it is I have...but it's one of the big side-by-sides with the ice/water through the door...which I love. I like the ice thing...it will crush the ice for margaritas for you if you want it to...or just cubes for other stuff.

Oh my never thought about the top hinges... Want the button on ice maker...not the lever. Ice maker/filter inside frig. White side by side milk jugs to set in the door...I like that idea I like the idea of clear drawers....a couple days ago I threw out some fruit....I have NO idea what it was...AND mushy, oozing.....GROSSSSSS! I darn near threw up cleaning that out. Counter top size....I will have to go back and look at that one. Oh my....I didn't even count the measurement for the handles. The depth is 26 3/4" without the door included and not counting the back inch or so that protrudes. What size is this thing? Man did you see the prices. OUCH Uhhh...maybe RV size would be better.LOL

Mine's not that old---it's a frigidaire--bought it at Lowes....it's just a regular fridge, but we did get the icemaker for in the freezer. No more ice cube trays ever. One thing I must say about newer fridges is that it's so nice to be able to put the milk in the door of the fridge....so it doesn't take up shelf room....
Appliances/electronics can really be hit and miss.....just because it's a more expensive brand it doesn't mean it won't break down sooner than a cheaper brand.....My MIL bought a nice Magnavox TV and it pooped out on her after a year.....We have a 27 inch Chang-hong that we got really cheap and we've had it for 5 years no problem....Actually the person that sold us the TV said that a lot of the cheaper brand names are either made with the same parts as the more expensive ones...either that or they are made by the same companies making the more expensive ones, just under another company name....
So it's really just a crap shoot I think.

Thank you Terry for the consumer reports. I can definitely use that. Okay...update on the frig...it started kicking back in and out and is getting colder....I wonder if it was in the defrost mode????(Now I feel stupid) It has never done that before during the day. Will it defrost ice cream to the point of being really soft?....not runny but super super soft. I don't like it if that is the case...that would form crystals all in the ice cream....and start breeding bacteria faster if that is the case. Maybe I should keep ice cream in my little chest freezer from now on. Thank you all for the responses and if anyone else has anything else they would like to add please do so. I will at least be prepared if something for sure happens....this frig is old! At least I got it narrowed down from 1218 to 23 with all your help! Thank you, thank you! Keeping my fingers crossed here.....I hate to open the door to check on it....It is kicking in and out...I would think if it was done defrosting it would stay kicked in longer. Now to go in and read in depth the consumer report!

Good info from Barley about the hinges. Ours was the same way. Best thing to do is take an actual tape measure and measure from floor to TOP of hinges before you buy just to be on the safe side.

I agree with barley, if you have the room, that would be the way to go. Love mine, it's a Kenmore. Steph
