Hi, My name is Kat. I recently had a chat with my teacher and she has lots of milkweed in her garden that attracts lots of caterpillars and butterflies. So i went out and got some scarlet milkweed today and planted it in my garden. Will this attract them or do i have to do something extra?

That should do the trick, Kat, especially for Monarch Butterflies. They feed ONLY on Milkweed. I am the bird specialist here but am starting to learn a lot about butterflies, too. Some of our other members are more knowledgeable than I about butterflies and the plants they like.

Just make sure you don't use any pestides'
on anything either...
*if you spray anything to kill the buggies,
it gets the butterflies/catapillars' too..*

Also, if you do a FORUM SEARCH, and type in
BUTTERFLIES, I believe you should come up with lot's of info on butterflies..
*things like their water and little tricks to have water in the garden for them
~~like mud or small pans of water with dark colored rocks to stay warm in the sun and warm the butterflies and they have a place to land..
*to keep of those plants in still/calm/windless area's for the butterflies...
*make sure it's in sun, as they like it warm
and don't like cold..

So you're Wiccan, Kat. I have several friends in England who are Wiccan, too. One in particular goes by the online name of Asphodel Fields. Her real name is Lisa, and she is 20-something, and is an English major specializing in Shakespeare, who lives in Bristol, England. She takes INCREDIBLE photographs of British countryside and Castle Ruins and raises pet rats. I have a black, male, pet lop-eared rabbit, named, "Two Bean Bags", who eats the willow fronds from the Weeping willow tree in my front yard. I also give hime the dead branches to chew on to keep his teeth sharp and worn down to the proper length. He is a real sweetheart and is incredibly affectionate and playful.

Kat, we have a butterfly expert here named peppereater, or just Dave. I mentioned you to him and he said he'd love to help you. He lives in Norman, OK but knows all about butterflies.

There is a book titled "Florida Butterfly Gardening" By Marc C Minno and Maria Minno.

This might help you to identify the butterflies as you see them, and/or help you identify other plants that attract butterflies...

How much room do you have to work with? Do you want to add some plants other then milkweed?

Oh wow, What a cute little bunny i love its eyes. Yes i am of the wicca religion and i work alot in fairy magick so getting intune with nature is on my top to do list!
