It's been kind of a slow month for me and gardening. When I was in Tucson I was part of a book club, but now that I'm here I don't have enough friends [who read] to form one. I was thinking about maybe doing one online, but when I type in "book club" I get results only for companies who sell books. I thought Oprah would be too cliche.

Does anyone know of one or have any ideas?

I've always been too chicken to be part of a book club, I'm a really slow reader! Sometimes just a page or two and I fall asleep, and I rarely read during the day! Also the pressure of buying the book, that would take me a good week or two before I'd get around to getting to a store that sells books, and the library has a wing I've bought with all the late charges I've paid over the years!

I'd give it a shot here though , What are you thinking about?

Right now I'm reading "Medical-Surgical Nursing" and would be glad to discuss it with anyone foolish enough to read it. It's 2300 pages long.

But if you decide to start a book club here I would participate in that too - it would for sure be more interesting than what I'm reading now.

We tried starting one here a long time ago....Well one of my best friends did because we are both such huge readers but it didn't do to well.....

I would be interested.....I love to read and have over 500 books!

One book I just finished that I'd recommend is called The Time Travelers Wife....can't remember the author but WOW was it good and different!

How about your library? Our library has several different ones for people who work and people who don't. I go to one at lunch time one time a month. It's great. I've met a lot of people I wouldn't have normally met. Has anyone read The Kite Runner? Wonderful book.

Loz, our club read The Time Traveler's Wife. I didn't enjoy it as much as the Kite Runner.

I haven't read that one Sheri, what's the general story of the book? I'll have to go down to the library and look for it!

It's the first novel for the writer but everyone I've talked to hated to come to the end of the book. It's about growing up in Iran. My mother hasn't been able to get it at her library. She said there are 70 people on the waiting list where she lives.

Wow, I'm going to search my librarys online catalog database and try to put it on hold now!!!!! It must be very good!

I actually really enjoyed the Time Travelers Wife.....although it was sort of confusing at first, the love story in it was amazing.

That's the part I liked - the love story. I thought some of it was way out there though. Several people in my group loved it.

All of the copies of The Kite Runner in my county are checked out. BUT, I did put a hold on it so when it comes in at the end of the month it'll be all mine--nobody else had a hold on it yet so I'll be first in line!

I cried at the end of the T. Travelers Wife....

If you like The Time Travelers Wife you might enjoy The Mermaid Chair.

I personally would love to have a book club here, but I spend way too much time here as it is!
What would everyone think about discussing one or two books at a time that we may have all read in the past, then work into reading a book that's more current (give me a month or so to get it and read it) and then discuss that? We could start a list of commonly read novels...then pick one or two.

See what I mean? There must be some books we've all read...I've read lots of Stephen King, as well...Well lots period.

BTW, I've read The Restaurant at the End of the Universe...is that the right title? And tons of sci-fi by Phillip K. Dick, Asimov...others. I love the classics and sci-fi.

My mom bought The Kite Runner as soon as it came out, and made everyone that she knows read it - including my sister and me. Amy, then 14 read it as fast as she could - I was surprised that she was so interested in it - good for her!

She just finished re-reading it as a required book for her honors English class in 10th grade! I was glad to see that her teacher had assigned such a moving and current book for the class.

I must say though, that as wonderfully written as it was, it had to be one of the most depressing books that I have ever read!

I can't wait to read it Lynne...depressing doesn't sound to good though....I'm more into the funny, light books...although I haven't always gravitated to them. I used to read a lot of Koontz, King, etc....Robin Cooks medical thrillers are some of my favs!!!!

I'm reading Stephen King's uncut version of The Stand." I read the original years ago. It's been so long that I can't tell what was added to this version.

Since being on line is a little different couldn't we have a book club that didn't depend on reading the same book. I mean I would love to hear about good current books and authors that have come out since I went on disability and can't go buying books by the gross anymore. lol. Also my eyes are so bad I have to have the large print so I don't get a headache and that's with my glasses on. Anyway, I'm a science fiction nut. Anne MacCaffrey, Clark, Piers Anthony, Heinlien, Mercedies Lackey, Zimmer-Bradley and then there are the murder mysteries I can't remember their names like I can the sci-fi but the one that writes about the FBI academy, and the one that went alphabetical, and the one that is a monk during the dark ages I think and oh I can't remember all the rest. And then there are the romances. I think I went on a kick were I would read the entire series that each romance publisher put out for years on end. Silhouette, harlequin, was it Zebra that did the bodice rippers? Any way I'm in. I so used to love to read.

loz - there are some pretty gruesome parts in this book, so please be prepared! Again, not to say that it isn't a great book, just not a light, happy one...

Hooper...would that be the guy that wrote "The Name of the rose" or whatever that they made a movie fo with Sean Connery?
It's GREAT that you like all that sci-fi...I read a lot of that myself.
My very favorite author of all time is Cormac McCarthy. He is well recognized but not necessarily well known. His best seller to date, as far as I know, is "All the Pretty Horses." His stuff all has a definite dark edge to it, but he writes in the most amazing style.

peppereater I don't know who wrote that one so I'm not sure. I also like the guy that wrote the sector general series of books. White but I can't remember his initials. Blasted memory isn't worth beans.
