As the winner of blue ribbons for two consecutive years, I will give you my method. I read a year ago, after Raising large onions for years, NOT to pull dirt up over the shoulders after the push through the dirt! So I don't know if this goes with the area in which you live or not.I DO cover up the exposed tops of the bulb, then I wait till the seed heads develop then gently push the tops over with the back of the rake, this causes the onion bulb to develop. Like I said, didn't read Not to cover em' back up till after the ribbons and growing them this way for years Duh

Hi Grandma,
I'm growing(trying)big onions too,I'm
growing 'Danvers' 'Mammoth improved'and 'Kelsae'the last two are English seeds.Their about 18ins around and growing.I to live in ontario north of Cobourg.
Watch for flower stalks these are seed heads
only bend this down not the neck of the onion.Harvest onions when the tops have dried and bent over on thier own.If possible leave them lying on the soil for up to a week to cure before storing

Thanks Limey thumbup
I have bent the seed or flower on the onions. I just checked them yesterday. They are growing, they like this wet weather we are having.I was told once that the only onions that you bend the tops on is dutch sets and never spanish sets. I think I will try to do what you said. also I was told that you leave spanish onions in until they have a frost, this makes them sweater they say.
Again thank you for your help. flw
