A Gardeners Forum Forums Gardening Reference Gardening in 2004 Weiglia and dead branches

Hi, I had a beautiful Weiglea shrub ( excuse my awful spelling) This thing was beautiful until last Sept. when I decided it was too big for it's spot and moved it. This year all it has is new growth right down in the center very low. This presents a problem because it has about 3 1/2 ft circumfence around it of empty branches. Do I now trim off all these empty branches and wait for the new inner baby branches to grow? Is it essentially like I moved a 5 year old plant to now start off with a first season 12 inch plant? Anyone have suggestions. My greatest joy is at least it didn't die. Thanks for the help.

From my opinion Wegela is the slowest plant to sprout and it sprouts from the bottom up, every thing else in my yard is blooming yet my weigels still looks half dead. give it some time to see if it was really damaged or just an eyesore for awhile like mine.
You can also give one of the branches a light skinning to see if it is green inside or dead wood.
