Any help would be greatly appreciated! I'd like to trim the plants back and bring inside for the winter to plant outside next spring.

HI it looks like dryed up nasturtium vine to me.did they bloom flowers?red,or yellow,or ornge.about the size of a half dollar or a quarter.this is just my best guess as to what the vine is.i am sure some of the other members might have a different guess on your vine and will be along with there input also.hope this helps your friend in gardening.mike57

Thanks for the suggestions. It was definetly dried out when I got them, which was only a week ago. There weren't any blooms on any of the 4 plants they gave me and they were all tangled up. I cut them back last night to a manageable mess and am trying to revive them. I'll take more pics tomorrow and post them. I looked at pictures of both suggestions and I'm not sure that either are the best match yet. Hopefully a more revived plant will give us more clues

don't melons or pumpkins grow on vines like that? I have never really seen on in person, but those pictures do look familar.

actually, it kind of looks like creeping charlie to me...and that's considered a ground cover altho it does spread, in vine fashion if it doesn't have dirt to send roots into. it's also very invasive. it's probably not that tho...the flower bud doesn't quite look like what creeping charlie has - hard to say tho, as it is pretty dried out.

please post some more pics if you get it revived a bit...

You can see that I've cut back the plants considerably. There was a lot of dead material caught up in the plants when I got them. I looked at creeping charlie but the description reads that the leaves clasp the stems and on this plant the leaves seem to grow far from the stems. It does seem to be more a ground cover than a vine though. I couldn't find any new buds yet. I'll put them in some bigger pots today and see how that goes.
