A Gardeners Forum Forums Gardening Reference Gardening in 2006 tomato seedlings: when do I transplant?

I have two tiny little guys they are getting their 3rd set of leaves, they are about 3" tall and sharing a small pot...like 2x3" They live in my windowsill.

Last frost is last week of May so I can't put these guys out until June 1.

Do I need to seperate the two and get them into a bigger pot? They are black tomatoes by the way if it matters.

If they are showing roots out the bottom of the seed tray, and they look a bit pressed for space, it may be a good idea to transplant them into individual pots. Up to you really. You can keep them alive as they are but they probably won't grow much more.

If it's just two, you could always plant them in the garden and protect them if there's a chance of frost.

I would seperate them now, so they have time to recover from being transplanrted and be able to put off more roots before going outdoors.
