I was going to throw away my avocado seed that I planted ages ago because I didn't see any growth. But when I pulled it up there was a big white "root" on the bottom of the seed. I'm wondering if I might have planted it upside down. The pointy end is up is that right?

Is the white tip going down into the soil?

Usually the root comes out first..
*of any seed*
and then once it gets some food like,
it'll send up the green growth up to the surface..

When in doubt for planting seeds.. and you don't know which end is up or down, plant sideways..
The plant will always send down or up and correct it's self..
Just if it's planted the wrong way down, it will
use up it's energy trying to go back up.......

It's going down just not directly down kind of squiggling. What has got me confused is that it appears to be one large tap root type thing and I thought that avocado roots liked to spread out sideways. The tip of the seed is facing up. The flat side is facing down into the soil. Is that the right way to do it?

I've never grown an avacado so, I'm
not sure about the tip of the seed..
going up or down..

but what you discribed sounds like the tap root..
I think all roots start out with the one root
coming out of the seed...*it's concentrated from the tiny area from the size of the seed..*
Then once it gets out, *remember it has to be a good sized for #1 breaking out of the seed, and #2 for breaking into the dirt out in the "wild",
hence that would be why it looks large or long or big..

And any of the seeds roots' I've seen,
to seem to go out the split side of the seed,
then it finds it's way to which way would be down,
so it may come out and do a quick turn to the direction it needed to go...

I'm tryin' to think who grew them..

Well I'll just be glad it has a root and try and be patient to see something on the up side lol. At least now I know to water it lol.
